Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What two brothers in Greek myth were the gods of sleep and death?

Answer: Hypnos and Thanatos

Hypnos and Thanatos. Give yourself a pat on the back if you said Hades. Hades was the lord of the Underworld and Thanatos was the god of Death. Helios was the god of the sun, Ares that of war. Theseus was a Greek hero and Psyche was a woman who accidentally made Eros fall in love with her. Necros does not exist. I made him up.
2. Which Trojan War hero commited suicide because he did not get a suit of armor?

Answer: Ajax

He committed suicide because the armor of Achilles was given to Odysseus, not him. It was a shattering loss for the Greeks because he was very strong. His name is now used as a cleaning product. The mystery is why they named it after such a sore loser.
3. Who was Orpheus' mother?

Answer: Calliope

Thetis was the mother of Achilles. Hera was the queen god, much more important than him. Probably too snooty to know he existed. Calypso was another Muse, and is remembered today in Jamaican music.
4. Enough with the Greeks. Who was the Egyptian god that appeared as a crocodile?

Answer: Sobek

Thoth was the god of wisdom and an ibis. Set was the god of chaos and a vicious beast. Hathor was a goddess of fertility and a cow.
5. Who was the Celtic god of love?

Answer: Angus MacOg

Setanta and Cuchulainn are both names for a famous Celtic hero. Lugh was the god of light.
6. What beast did Setanta slay to become famous?

Answer: A hound.

From this deed, Setanta's name became Cuchulainn, which means 'the Hound of Culann'. He killed the blacksmith Culann's hound when it attacked him while guarding the man's house. When he realized that the beast was only doing its job, he offered to take its place and train its puppy to take the job.
7. Norse myth: What is the bridge from Asgard to Midgard called?

Answer: Bifrost

Sigurd was a famous Norse hero who slew a dragon and did other heroic stuff. He was the son of Sigmund and got from his father (million-dollar question) a sword.
8. What was Ragnarok? (this is Norse again)

Answer: A time when the Midgard serpent would swallow the earth, a bunch of gods would die, and the select few survivors would rebuild the world.

The ice and wolves thing is Fimbulwinter, the first stage of Ragnarok. The dead warrior place is Hel, also the name of a goddess of death.
9. Aztec myth: What serpent god was tricked into giving up his own form for that of a man?

Answer: Quetzalcoatl

The bird that is named after him is the Resplendant Quetzal, a beautiful South American bird. In his serpent form, he was known for having a brilliant coat of feathers. This myth is one of the most commonly accepted origins of the amphithere, a South American dragon.
10. Which, of the following only, has the least heads?

Answer: Charybdis

Charybdis was really only a big mouth in the ocean that sucked in a whirlpool. Scylla was its counterpart, a many-headed dragon that lived on the other side of the strait which they both inhabited. Recommended reading: "The Sea of Monsters" by Rick Riordan, in which Charybdis is depicted as a giant pair of dentures with braces.
