Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Cupid is the Roman god of love, so it is quite appropriate that his mother was which of the following?

Answer: Venus

Venus (Greek equivalent: Aphrodite) was the goddess of love and the mother of the god of love. Cupid's father is not fully agreed upon but is thought by some to be Mars or Vulcan (Ares or Hephaestus).
2. Cupid is one of the few gods probably better recognised by his Roman name, but he does have a Greek equivalent. Who is it?

Answer: Eros

Eros' parentage is also up for debate: his potential parents include Chaos, Aphrodite, Ares, Hermes, Iris, Zephyrus or Nyx. Some say he was a primordial god (one of the first gods), and has no parents.
3. Which of the following is sometimes used to describe Cupid?

Answer: Blind

Cupid is often blind or blindfolded as a metaphor that love is blind and arbitrary.

Shakespeare described this in "A Midsummer Night's Dream": "And therefore is winged Cupid painted blind." (Act 1 Scene 1)
4. Cupid has two types of arrows, with different tips. What are the tips made from?

Answer: Gold and lead

The golden arrow causes anyone hit by it to fall in love. The lead arrow causes the opposite: aversion.

The Greeks thought that "love at first sight" was due to Cupid's (or Eros') golden arrows, and often used metaphors of these arrows when describing love.
5. Which of the following couples did Cupid use his arrows on?

Answer: Apollo and Daphne

Apollo was teasing Cupid and saying he was a better archer than him. Cupid struck Apollo with the golden arrow, causing him to fall in love with Daphne, and struck Daphne with the lead arrow. Daphne hated Apollo and when he tried to chase her, she begged her father (Peneus) to help. Peneus turned her into a laurel tree, which is why the laurel tree is sacred to Apollo.
6. What is Cupid's sacred animal?

Answer: Hare

Cupid and the hare are often shown together in drawings or sculptures. Cupid is also commonly associated with the dolphin.
7. There is a myth involving Cupid and Psyche. Psyche was the youngest and most beautiful daughter of a king. A goddess was jealous of her and asked Cupid to make her fall in love with a monster. Which goddess was this?

Answer: Venus

Venus, goddess of beauty, was jealous as people were starting to ignore her and even worshipped or prayed to Psyche instead of her. She sent Cupid to shoot a golden arrow at her and make her fall in love with a monster, but when he arrived, he fell in love with Psyche.

Psyche's father was worried that the gods were angry at them and consulted Apollo's oracle. He was worried with the prediction and took Psyche to the top of a cliff where Zephyr (the West Wind) transported her to a meadow. Wandering around, she found a house where invisible servants would wait on her, and where she met Cupid.
8. Psyche ended up getting taken to a large, comfortable house. At night, she would go to her bedroom and sleep with Cupid in darkness. What did he tell her not to do?

Answer: Look at him

The stranger always left before sunrise and she was forbidden to look at him. One night, after Cupid fell asleep, Psyche couldn't resist the temptation and brought a lamp into the room. He was the most beautiful creature she had ever seen, and she spilled oil from the lamp over him in shock. Cupid fled and she chased after him.
9. What did the myth of Cupid and Psyche end with?

Answer: Cupid and Psyche getting married

After Psyche tried to chase after Cupid, Venus found her and forced her to complete a series of tasks - including a trip to the underworld. Cupid eventually found Psyche and married her.
10. Cupid had a child. Who was it?

Answer: Voluptas

Psyche was Voluptas' mother. "Voluptas" is Latin for "pleasure" and her Greek counterpart is Hedone. She is often seen with the Charites (Three Graces).
