Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am the goddess of dawn, and according to Disney, a princess as well. What is my name?

Answer: Aurora

My siblings are Luna, the moon, and Sol, the sun. My children are the Anemoi, the four directions of wind. I asked Zeus to make Tithonus, my lover, immortal. Zeus did it, but I forget to ask for immortal youth as well! Tithonus grew so old and wrinkly that I eventually turned him into a grasshopper.
2. I am a Roman war goddess, seen as Mars' wife, sister or daughter. In portraits, I am always holding a sword and wearing a helmet. My name is also mentioned in Shakespeare's 'Macbeth'. So? Who am I?

Answer: Bellona

The famous artist, Rembrandt, painted me as a warrior queen. My feast day is the third of June. My Greek counterpart is the goddess Enyo. The poisonous plant belladonna is used in my rituals, and it was probably named for me, or vice versa.
3. The goddess of growing plants, I have a (dwarf) planet and a chemical element named after me. Oh, and a character in a Shakespeare play. Who am I?

Answer: Ceres

The word 'cereal' comes from my name, because I'm also the goddess of grain. My festival (the Cerealia) is on the 12th of April, and finishes on the 19th. Another piece of work featuring me is the New Jersey flag. I'm the woman on the right.
4. The fairy tale 'Sleeping Beauty' is apparently based on my role in an old legend. I have many children, but their names mean strange things, like 'Quarrel', 'Famine' and 'Toil'. Suitable really, seeing as I am the goddess of strife. What is my name?

Answer: Discordia

There is a modern religion named after me (Discordism) that began in the 1950s. My Greek equivalent is Eris, who has a dwarf planet named after her.
5. I am a water nymph, one of the Camenae, famous for being the second wife of the second king of Rome. My name is mentioned in Oscar Wilde's 'The Importance of Being Earnest'. Who am I?

Answer: Egeria

I am also connected with the goddess Diana and childbirth (separately). My name means 'black poplar'. Near a busy Roman gate (the Porta Cappena), I had my own sacred grove where people could worship me.
6. My festival is on November 15th, and I had my own temple at the base of Mt. Socrate. I am the goddess of many things, like the harvest, freedom and fire for example. On another note, my name is also a genus of plants and of beetles. But what is my name?

Answer: Feronia

The slaves believed that sitting on one of the rocks in my holy grove would soon make them free. If they were released, they always went to give thanks in my temple. But in 211 BC, my grove and temple were destroyed by Hannibal's army, who took all the gold and silver they could carry.
7. We are the three Graces, and each one of us stands for something. There is Good Cheer, Mirth and Beauty. Many famous artists have painted us as a trio, among them Raphael and Botticelli. I have already told you our name in English; can you put it into Latin?

Answer: Gratiae

We are also mentioned in Homer's writings, and (more recently) there are three trees in a Californian state park named 'The Graces'.
8. I am the protector of everything equine -- horses, donkeys, mules -- and a goddess of fertility. In acknowledgement of this, the 'Legend of Zelda' features a horse with a variant of my name...which is?

Answer: Hippona

The variant is Epona, but you would have known the answer if I had given it to you! I am quite widespread; not only did the Romans worship me, but also the Celts, Germans and a few Syrians! My feast day is December the 18th.
9. My name is part of the Spanish for 'rainbow', which is fitting, because I am the human image for that. I'm a character in Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' and in 1946, I was on a stamp! I think that's enough clues. Who am I?

Answer: Iris

In the 'Iliad' by Homer, I am often mentioned as a divine messenger. An iris can today mean a type of flower, part of your eye, a colour or an opera, among other things!
10. I am the goddess of fountains, springs and wells. There is a large (now ruined) temple to me in Rome. Jupiter turned me into a water nymph, and gave me a sacred well as my own. How kind of him! What do you think my name is?

Answer: Juturna

I helped my brother Turnus in battle against Aeneas by handing him his weapons, but I took him away before he could be killed. I have one child named Fontus by Janus (who is my husband).
11. I am a personification of death! I am a black-robed goddess with dark wings. I received very little sacrifices; most of them went to my male equivalent Orcus. The Colosseum had a gate dedicated to me. Who am I?

Answer: Libitina

When someone died, it was common for a coin to be brought to my temple. I'm very rarely in pictures, so I'm quite unknown. Undertakers were known as 'libitinarii' in honor of me.
12. I am quite depressing: I decide whether infants are born alive or dead. My name means 'flowing'. A puppy was often sacrificed for me. What am I called?

Answer: Mana Genita

I am also the leader of the Manes, who are the spirits of deceased loved ones. The Manes were the cause of the first gladiator games, as they required blood sacrifices. Another form of my name is Geneta Mana.
13. My name means 'to give what is due' and I am the goddess of revenge. A very particular type, though: if you are arrogant before the gods, I will find you! I am also thought, by some people, to have given birth to Helen of Troy. Who am I?

Answer: Nemesis

Today, my name means 'arch enemy'. I had my own festival, the Nemeseia. I appeared on several Roman coins. I was also known as Rhamnusia, as I was the goddess of Rhamnous (a place in Greece) as well.
14. I am the goddess of plenty, and my name means 'fruit'. I am often depicted holding a pruning knife or a large basket of fruit. I married the season god Vertumnus after he tricked me into it. What's my name?

Answer: Pomona

There is a statue of me near the Plaza Hotel in New York City. Professor Sprout in the "Harry Potter" series has Pomona for a first name, and I am also mentioned in the "Chronicles of Narnia".
15. I am a Roman goddess of motherhood. My name comes from the Sabine (the Italian tribe before the Romans) word for lance or spear, so I am often portrayed holding one. Who am I?

Answer: Quiritis

I am often associated with another motherhood goddess, Juno. Later on Juno was sometimes worshipped under the name Juno Quiritis. There was a Roman marriage tradition that the bride's hair was parted or cut with a spear. This is probably to do with my connection to Juno, as Juno was also the goddess of marriage.
16. My festival is on April the 25th, in honour of me and my male counterpart. I am the goddess of grain disease, and protecting grains. A dog (the blood and entrails are essential) is normally sacrificed at my festival. What's my name?

Answer: Robigo

My male counterpart is Robigus, and my festival is called the Robigalia. I am named after the reddish-brown wheat rust. There is a Christian festival, called the feast of Rogation, which involves blessing the parish and the fields. The feast of Rogation also happens on the 25th of April, and probably took the place of my festival.
17. I am the wife of the sea god, Neptune! We have three children together. I am the goddess of seawater, or of salt water. I also look after springs and the very depths of the ocean. I am often portrayed as a nymph, crowned with seaweed. My name is rather pretty; what do you think it is?

Answer: Salacia

The god Neptune wanted to marry me, but I was in great awe of him, and ran away to hide in the depths of the Atlantic Ocean. Neptune sent a dolphin to find me and bring him back to me. I then agreed to marry him. He was so overjoyed at this news that he sent the dolphin up to the heavens, and the dolphin is now a constellation, Delphinus.
18. I represent the Earth! Along with the goddess Ceres, I am prayed to for good farm productivity. But I am also associated with marriage, motherhood and pregnant women and animals. Who am I?

Answer: Terra Mater

My name means 'mother earth'. I have four children, each one representing the seasons. My festival is on April the 15th, and it involves the sacrifice of pregnant cows! Many science fiction authors have used my name to refer to the Earth.
19. I am the goddess of the hearth, the home and the family. My name means 'burning', and there was always a sacred fire in my temples. Women who looked after their household would tell the future by throwing sacrifices to me into the fire, and then watching the way it burned. So many clues! Now, do you know my name?

Answer: Vesta

I have my own festival (the Vestalia) that lasted from the 7th of June to the 15th. The Greek version of me is Hestia. The priestesses of my temple were called Vestales. Their main job was to keep the fire in my temple burning.
20. I am the goddess of magic, and my name is connected to this site! I haunt crossroads and graveyards, and I am also known as the Queen of Ghosts. Who am I?

Answer: Trivia

I am the equivalent of the Greek goddess Hecate. I am a friend of Ceres, and helped her find her daughter. I am mentioned in both Ovid and Virgil's work.
