The play was adapted from the animated film of the same name, and debuted in 1993 in Houston before moving to Broadway the following year. Alan Menken wrote the original music that was added to his own original score from the movie. Susan Egan was the first to play Belle in the Broadway version.

The play followed the animated Disney movie of the same name, debuting in 1997. In the play version Rafiki was gender switched to a female to create another large female part in the production. Jason Raize was the first person to play Simba. The production won a Tony Award for best Musical in 1998.
