Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This painting, although known by a different name, is actually called "The Shooting Company of Frans Banning Cocq and Willem van Ruytenburch". It is displayed in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. I first saw it in 1965 and I sat hours admiring it. It gives the impression the people in the painting are moving, an unusual characteristic, for in those days, portraits were static pictures. When this painting was "rediscovered", it was quite dark. How is this masterpiece commonly called?

Answer: The Night Watch

"The Nightwatch" was painted by Rembrandt van Rijn. It owes its nickname to the scene it depicts, a group of military men, one of them with a helmet and several others with weapons. There is also a young girl and a dog, and those who do not know that the painting is a portrait of people who paid to appear in the painting, could wonder what the girl and the dog are doing with the guards.

The picture is dark, but it was even darker because of the excess of varnish it accumulated through the years, before being restored.

It gave the impression of a night scene.
2. "The Milkmaid" and "The Music Lesson" are two of the paintings of this Dutch master from the city of Delft. If you visit the city, they will show you the spot in one of the canals where the painter sat on a boat, just to paint. He specialized in middle class home scenes. They have made a movie about one of his paintings, "Girl with a Pearl Earring". Who is this painter of the Dutch Golden Age?

Answer: Johannes Vermeer

Vermeer (1632-1675) was known for the quality of his pigments and the use of light. He portrayed mainly women in his own home. I was told when I visited the Rijksmuseum that the blue used in his paintings was called Vermeer Blue, which he made crushing and pulverizing lapis lazuli, a semi precious stone.

In those days, the color blue was obtained with azurite, a less expensive stone. Vermeer also painted "The Lady Seated at a Virginal" and "Young Woman with a Water Pitcher".
