Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. ROY G BIV is a mnemonic for what?

Answer: Colors of the spectrum

The visible spectrum in order of decreasing wavelength is: Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet. Wavelengths outside the visible spectrum include infrared and ultraviolet.
2. Do Men Ever Visit Britain is a mnemonic for _______.

Answer: British aristocratic rank order

After Kings and Queens, the aristocratic ranks go: Duke, Marquis, Earl, Viscount, Baron.
3. For what is "My Very Educated Mother Just Served Us Noodles" a mnemonic?

Answer: Planets of the solar system

Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. The mnemonic no longer includes Pluto, which is now considered a dwarf planet, not a planet. Pluto does not meet the definition of a planet according to the International Astronomical Union, which states a planet must be "large enough to become round due to the force of its own gravity and dominate the neighborhood around its orbit." As Pluto meets neither of these requirements, it no longer qualifies as a planet.
4. Kings Play Chess On Fine Grain Sand is a mnemonic for what?

Answer: Classification of organisms

Organisms are classified according to Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
5. Good Boys Do Fine Always is a mnemonic for remembering what?

Answer: Lines of the bass clef

From the bottom up, the notes on the lines of the bass clef are GBDFA. The spaces are All Cows Eat Grass. The treble clef lines are Every Good Boy Does Fine, and spaces are FACE. Middle C is above the bass clef and below the treble clef.
6. Thirty days hath September, April, June and _____. Provide the missing word in the mnemonic.

Answer: November

All the rest have 31. There's a part about February, but it's probably easier to remember either 28 or 29 depending on leap year--there should be a mnemonic for which years are leap years, too.
7. "When two ______ go walking, the first one does the talking." Provide the missing word in the mnemonic.

Answer: vowels

This works fairly often, as in boat, meat, train; but it also has many exceptions, such as break, again and field.
8. "I before E except after __." Provide the missing letter in the mnemonic:

Answer: C

"... Or when sounded as "a," in neighbor and weigh." It usually works, even though there are numerous exceptions to this one; for example, "weird" is weird.
9. "I Value Xylophones Like Calves Desire Milk" is a mnemonic for what?

Answer: Roman numerals

In the Roman system of writing numbers, I=1, V=5, X=10, L=50, C=100, D=500, and M=1000.
10. "Red sky at night, sailor's _______, red sky in the morning, sailors take warning." Provide the missing word or words in the mnemonic.

Answer: delight

A red sky indicates the presence of particles in the atmosphere. Since weather patterns usually move from east to west, a red sky at night means a storm has passed; a red sky in the morning means a storm is on the way.
