Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Spot the mnemonic: "My Pretty Little Corvette" - Prince

Answer: Nobel prizes

The original five Nobel prizes - Medicine, Physics, Literature, Chemistry and Peace - were created in Alfred Nobel's 1896 will. A Nobel memorial prize in economic sciences was added in 1968, having been endowed by the Swedish bank Sveriges Riksbank.
2. Spot the mnemonic: "Our Super Erotic Hogmanay" - Madonna

Answer: The Great Lakes

Bringing together Madonna's penchant for the seamier side of life together with two of her "homes" - Michigan and Scotland. Homes is, of course, one of the more familiar mnemonics for the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior).
3. Spot the mnemonic: "Really Ugly Fighter" - Christina Aguilera

Answer: Permanent members of the UN Security Council

The Security Council's five permanent members are Russia, United Kingdom, France, China and America. Aguilera's repertoire contains the hit "Fighter" and "Beautiful", rather than "Really Ugly".
4. Spot the mnemonic: "Smells Like A Dead Cheese" - Nirvana

Answer: Largest countries in Africa

The six largest countries in Africa, by area and in decreasing size order, are Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo, Sudan, Libya, Chad and Niger. For anyone that's desperately interested, the top ten is completed by Angola, Mali, South Africa and Ethiopia.
5. Spot the mnemonic (and don't forget the "and"): "El Viva Prospekt's Champions" - Queen And Coldplay

Answer: The seven hills of Rome

The seven hills on which the ancient city of Rome was built are the Esquiline, Viminal, Palatine, Caelian, Quirinal, Aventine and Capitoline.
6. Spot the mnemonic: "Nationalistic Xenophobia's A Hit" - Ronan Keating

Answer: Noble Gases

The noble gases are neon (Ne), xenon (Xe), argon (Ar), helium (He), radon (Rn) and krypton (Kr). They are included within group 18 of the periodic table. Use of the word noble followed its attachment to the group of noble metals, in both cases describing low levels of reactivity.
7. Spot the mnemonic: "Bring Me English Values" - Dido

Answer: English hereditary titles

The five hereditary ranks of the English peerage, in ascending order of rank, are baron, viscount, earl, marquess and duke. While this mnemonic does not properly place the titles in an order, it does assist in naming all of them! It is also possible to be created a life peer, which carries the title of lord, but this ceases with the death of the recipient.
8. Spot the mnemonic: "Grade Every Last Sinner Well" - Paula Abdul

Answer: Deadly sins

The seven deadly sins are gluttony, envy, lust, sloth, wrath, pride and avarice. Throughout history there have been many aids to their memorisation. A medieval mnemonic based upon the names in Latin was "saligia". A more recent one, referencing Romans 6 v. 23 - The wages of sin is death - gives "wages (pl.)".

Based on Abdul's record as a judge on "American Idol", there should probably be a g in sinner!
9. Spot the mnemonic: "Final Win" - Richard Marx

Answer: Venues for the world's four Open tennis tournaments

The tennis year begins in January with the Australian Open held at Melbourne Park, Melbourne. The French Open, played on clay in Paris, takes place at (Stade) Roland Garros. Then it's on to the UK's Wimbledon and the very brief grass court season. Finally, in late August, the US Open is staged at Flushing Meadow.

The mnemonic uses words that start with the letters of the venues, albeit not in order, which would be MRWF, or Marx, Richard - "Win, Final", which is more than a bit convoluted!
10. Spot the mnemonic: "Does Success Guarantee Dizzy Heights?"- Britney Spears

Answer: Walt Disney's seven dwarfs

The dwarfs (Disney's spelling), who were unnamed in earlier versions of the fairy tale, were given names for Disney's 1937 movie. If you need reminding, these were Doc, Sleepy, Grumpy, Dopey, Happy, Bashful and Sneezy.
