Wait, Eat, Sleep Trivia Quiz

A clever little mnemonic I just made up for quiz writing (Write, Edit, Submit). Sure, that one obviously isn't common, but here are 10 mnemonics that are a little more popular.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Did you know that "Super Man Helps Every One"? Yes he does, but outside of the series, he also helps you remember what?

Answer: The Great Lakes

Lake Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario make up the five Great Lakes that form the border of Canada and the United States from Ontario. The lakes connect together for one long sea road. Lake Ontario is the farthest to the east, and links to the St. Lawrence River which goes on to the Atlantic Ocean.

The Welland Canal (for ships) and Niagara River (with the Niagara Falls) link to Lake Erie, which then connects back north to Lake Huron through Lake St. Clair and the St. Clair River. From the top end of Lake Huron, you can go straight into Lake Michigan or north to Lake Superior.
2. "Some Old Horse Came A-Hoppin' Through Our Alley". While it was in your alley, the old horse helped you memorize something to do with which branch of mathematics?

Answer: Trigonometry

This mnemonic is actually split up in to three smaller portions. First the three letters SOH stand for Sine = Opposite/Hypotenuse, referencing the calculation you need for the sine law. Part two, CAH, is Cosine = Adjacent/Hyptoenuse, for the cosine law. Finally, TOA is the tangent ratio, Tangent = Opposite/Adjacent.
3. Did you know that "Dumb Kids Playing Catch On Freeway Get Squashed"? Their parents better not be of what scientific profession, because they should know this mnemonic off by heart?

Answer: Biologist

The hierarchy in the animal kingdom is Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and Species. Another mnemonic is "Dear King Philip Come Over For Good Spaghetti" as well as "Keen Paleontologists Can Only Find Good Specimens", leaving out the domain.
4. Remember that "You need might to do push-ups (from the floor). You must hold tight doing chin-ups (off the ceiling)". When doing which activity would this mnemonic come in handy?

Answer: Spelunking

Stalactites and stalagmites have many different mnemonics to designate the two from each other The 'mites comes from the floor and 'tites from the top. The g in stalagmites and c in stalactites also can help distinguish the differences, where g means ground, and c means ceiling. When spelunking through caves, it is always good to remember which is which.
5. "King Henry Died By Drinking Chocolate Milk" and while doing so made a mnemonic for what?

Answer: Metric Measuring System

Kilo-, Hecto-, Deca-, base unit, deci-, centi-, and milli, are the units in the metric measuring system. They are listed in descending order, from longest to shortest. You can also use "King Henry Doesn't Mind Dusting Clean Money" as a mnemonic.
6. On the Mohs Mineral hardness scale, which world city would correctly finish this mnemonic, going from 1 to 10 on the scale? "________ Girls Can Flirt And Only Quit To Chase Dwarves."

Answer: Toronto

The T in the mnemonic refers to Talc, and then Gypsum, Calcite, Fluorite, Apatite, Orthoclase, Quartz, Topaz, Corundum and Diamond. Another mnemonic for this example is "Terrible Giants Can Find Alligators Or Quaint Trolls Conveniently Digestible".
7. I'm sure you weren't aware that "My Enormous Penguin Bounces Pretty High"? He probably bounces while remembering what chemistry-related topic?

Answer: The series of alkanes

Methane, Ethane, Propane, Butane, Pentane, and Hexane are the first six in the series of alkanes when they are listed in increasing order according to the number of carbon atoms in each molecule. When adding in the next four alkanes (Heptane, Octane, Nonane, Decane), you can have mnemonics like "Mother Eats Phone Books and Pink Hats, Has Oxygen/Nitrogen Discomfort" and "Monarch Edward Prefers Birthday Parties; His Highness Offers No Drinks".
8. For the four spaces, from bottom to top, of the bass clef can be remembered by the mnemonic "Brian Eats Food Constantly".

Answer: False

For the four bass clef spaces, you can use the mnemonics "All Cows Eat Grass" or "All Cars Eat Gas". The "Brian Eats Food Constantly" is not a known mnemonic for anything!
9. BEDMAS or PEDMAS is a mnemonic used to describe the order of operations in algebra. What does the D stand for?

Answer: Divide

Brackets or Parentheses, Exponents, Divide, Multiply, Add and Subtract are the steps to solving algebraic expressions. If you like mnemonics with words you can use "Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally" for this.
10. The words ancient, science, and society are all exceptions to which common mnemonic?

Answer: I before E except after C

I before E except after C is a common spelling mnemonic, but it vastly oversimplifies things! In full, it should read I before E except after C when sounded like E; this removes many of the apparent anomalies, where the EI combination sounds like A (as in neighbor and weigh) or the CIE sequence (which comes from another language where the word had its origins) is pronounced as two syllables.

The other three answers all are guidelines to spelling other words. For example, for "Always smell a rat when you spell separate", the letter a has to be precede the rat inside (sep a rat e). There is always an ache in a (te ache r). A (fri end) is always there when the end comes.
