Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Here come a man in uniform. What brings you to this place?" Who appears after Eponine's death?

Answer: Valjean

Valjean has come to the barricade to help. He knows that Cosette and Marius are in love, and he wants the best for his daughter, so he goes to keep Marius safe.
2. "Give me no thanks M'sieur, There is something you can do." Who sings this?

Answer: Valjean

Valjean would like the life of Javert. He basically saves Javert from being killed as a spy, but Javert takes his own life because he can't see how a criminal can become good.
3. "Here's to pretty girls who went to our _____." Complete the lyric.

Answer: Heads

From "Drink With Me" the students are drinking and thinking about the different girls they have been with. They are worried about what will happen if they die the next day.
4. "Do I care if I should die Now she goes across the sea? Life without _______ means nothing at all." Without whom?

Answer: Cosette

"Would you weep, Cosette, should Marius fall? Will you weep, Cosette, for me?" This is the last thing Marius says before he falls asleep.
5. "Bring him peace. Bring him ____. He is young. He is only a boy."

Answer: joy

From "Bring Him Home" one of Jean Valjean's most famous solos. I love this song. It is a great one to sing if you need to work on vibrato because of the long notes.
6. "Yet we will not abandon those who cannot _____."

Answer: Hear

From "The Dawn of Anguish" Enjolras realizes that the people are still afraid, and won't be coming to help them fight. So, he sends the women and fathers of children home.
7. Who is the first to volunteer to go into the streets and gather bullets?

Answer: Marius

Marius: "Let me go into the streets There are bodies all around Ammunition to be had Lots of bullets to be found!"
Enjorlas: "I won't let you go, it's too much of a chance!"
Marius: "The same is true for any man here!"
Valjean: "Let me go. He's no more than a boy. I am old, I have nothing to fear."
Gavroche: "You need somebody quicker and I volunteer!" And then Gavroche runs over the barricade and gets shot. I always hate that part. I find that Gavroche is the coolest of the non-major characters.
8. "So you'd better run for cover when the pup grows _____." What word is missing when Gavroche sings this line for the last time?

Answer: He dies before he finishes.

The scene where Gavroche dies. I hate that he has to die. I love that little kid, and it is a shame that the French Revolution was similar to that, with children dying in the streets.
9. "Let others rise to take our place until the Earth is ______!"

Answer: Free

Sung by Enjolras right before the final battle at the barricades. Right after this the entire group, save Marius and Valjean, are killed.
10. Where does Valjean take Marius?

Answer: The sewers

Valjean finds Marius unconscious at the barricades and takes him into the sewers to escape. Little does he know that Javert is following him.
11. "Someone's got to collect their odds and ends. As a service to the town!" Who sings this?

Answer: Thenardier

Thenardier is in the sewers striping the bodies for their valuables when Valjean brings Marius to the same spot. Thenardier ends up stealing Marius's ring and then using it to try and prove that Valjean killed someone.
12. "The man of _____ comes again and talks of justice."

Answer: Mercy

Javert has found Valjean and Marius at the entrance to the sewers. He does not want to let Valjean go because he does not believe that he will return. But finally, he relents and Valjean is able to take Marius to the doctors.
13. "All it would take Was a flick of his knife. Vengeance was his and he gave me back my _____!"

Answer: life

Javert is so distraught over Valjean saving his life and not killing him when he had the chance that he can't think straight. He also thinks that he now is in Valjean's debt, but he won't live like that so he kills himself!
14. "And my thoughts fly apart. Can this man be believed? Shall his sins be _________? Shall his crimes be reprieved?"

Answer: Forgiven

This is sung right before Javert kills himself. He is caught in a mental turmoil as his whole way of thinking falls apart because of Valjean's actions.
15. "They were schoolboys never held a gun... Fighting for a new world That would rise up like the sun." "Where's that new world now the fighting's _____?"

Answer: Done

From the song "Turning" the women a singing about the fighting and looking for news about the fight. They remark on how nothing ever seems to change; "Nothing changes. Nothing ever can".
16. "The very words that they had sung became their last communion. On the lonely barricade at _____."

Answer: Dawn

From "Empty Chairs at Empty Tables." Marius is remembering his friends and is haunted by images of them at the ABC cafe. He doesn't understand why he alone was saved from death.
17. Does Cosette ever sing "My name is Marius Pontmercy?"

Answer: Yes

She sings this to Marius when she is helping him recover and they are remembering the night that the first truly met, in the garden of Rue Plumet.
18. "When I look at you, I remember _______."

Answer: Eponine

The Thenardiers have come to the wedding feast to try to blackmail Marius. They want him to think that Valjean killed someone, what they don't know is that Marius was the man on Valjean's back and he is obviously not dead.
19. Who is the first spirit to come to Valjean?

Answer: Fantine

"M'sieur, I bless your name M'sieur, lay down your burden You raised my child in love and you will be with God." I love how Valjean is forgiven at the end, it really makes you think about the choices that we make in life and how that could affect what happens after death.
20. "Do you hear the people sing? Lost in the valley of _________. It is the music of a people who are climbing to the light."

Answer: The night

From the very last song of the whole musical. My favorite part is; "For the wretched of the Earth, there is a flame that never dies. Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise." It is such a good way to end a show about the wretched of the Earth, because it gives people hope.
