Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. According to Snorre Sturlason, an Icelandic author, poet, historian and politician, who was the mastermind behind Baldr's death?

Answer: Loki

When Baldr was born Odin asked every plant and being to promise they would never hurt Baldr. Baldr was basically immortal. But, Odin didn't ask the mistletoe. Loki found out about that and made an arrow out of a mistletoe and handed it to Hödr, Baldr's blind half-brother, who was target-practising at Baldr.
2. Which of these gods isn't said to have been part of the creation of the world?

Answer: Mimir

Odin, Ve and Vili are sons to Bestla and Borr.
But in "Völuspá" (a poem about the creation of the world) it wasn't Ve and Vili that helped Odin, it was Hoenir and Lódurr.
It's believed that those were just other names for Ve and Vili.
3. Vali is one of Odin's sons. He was born for the purpose of killing Hödr, another one of Odin's sons.

Answer: True

He beacame an adult just one day after his birth. Then he killed Hödr.
4. Which of these creatures doesn't have Loki as a father?

Answer: Sleipnir

All of the options have Loki as a parent, but Sleipnir has Loki as a mother. Loki has the ability to change shape, and was a mare when he got Sleipnir.
5. What was the name of the wolf-dog that guarded the entrance to Hel, the land of the dead?

Answer: Garm

Hel, not to be mistaken with hell, is the land of the dead. Garm was the second biggest dog, after the Fenriswolf.
Grani is the son of Sleipnir.
Hati was a wolf that chased the moon across the sky at night. Skoll was his brother, who chased the sun instead.
6. When Thor meets Utgardaloki their servants compete in speed. What is it said that Utgardaloki's servant was, in reality?

Answer: His own thought

Thor and Loki had travelled to Utgard and there they participated in several rigged contests. In addition to the speed contest, Loki had a eating contest against fire, Thor tried to lift a "cat" (the Midgard serpent) off the ground, wrestle Elli (old age personified) and empty a drinking vessel connected to the sea.
7. What type of creatures created Thor's hammer Mjölnir?

Answer: Dwarves

The dwarves Eitri and Brokk made it. They made a bet with Loki that they couldn't create something that was more beautiful than those items (like Odin's spear) created by Ivaldi's sons. If they succeeded they got Loki's head.
But they made it a bit wrong. The handle became too short. They still won the bet, but actually cutting his head off wasn't a part of the deal.
8. There are different versions of the stories about the gods in Norse mythology. There is, for example, another version of Odin and his wife Frigg. What are the names of those gods?

Answer: Od and Freya

People see a lot of similarities between these two couples.
Fun fact: When Od left their home to go out on adventure, Freya cried tears of red gold.
9. There were three norns; which isn't one of them?

Answer: Moirae

The norns live under the roots of Yggdrasil. They weave the tapestry of faith. Each person's life is a string and the length of the string is the length of their life.
Moirae is the Greek equivalent of the norns.
10. How did Fjölnir, son of Frey, die?

Answer: Drowned in mead

He was at a party at Frodi's and stayed the night there. But during the night he got lost and walked in the wrong door, where a vessel full of mead stood. He slipped and fell right into the vessel.
