Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was one objective of Realism?

Answer: Reproduce nature

Realism intended to paint things just as they were. No embellishment, no interpretation, no emotions or feelings, just reality. However, it did (and does) pay attention to perspective, which must be accurate.
2. Where did Impressionism originate?

Answer: France

Impressionism originated in France, in the second half of the 19th century. Impressionists usually paint landscapes. They are also very concerned with light, how it is reflected and how it acts in our brains.
3. What does Surrealism literally mean?

Answer: Beyond reality

Surrealism can be defined as an artistic style that developed during the 20th century and provided nonrational or unreal imagery. You have to make your imagination work to really understand Surrealism.
4. Gustave Courbet, Jean Francois Millet and Honoré Daumier were some of the most famous Realist artists. Which country did they all represent?

Answer: France

Courbet died in 1877, and he is considered the most important realist. Millet died in 1875 and Daumier in 1879. If you're interested in Realism, you might want to check out some paintings from the above artists like "The Gleaners" by Millet, "Young Women from the Village" by Courbet and "The Third Class Carriage" by Daumier.
5. Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir were important Impressionists. Which of these was another Impressionist?

Answer: Edgar Degas

Henry is a French soccer player. Dali was a Spanish painter and Frida Kahlo a Mexican painter. They were both Surrealists.

Degas, besides from being a painter, was also a sculptor. Although he is considered one of the founders of Impressionism, he always preferred to be called a Realist. Degas died aged 83 in Paris, France.
6. What is the name of the movement that uses dots of different colors?

Answer: Pointillism

Some of the important artists from this movement include Seurat, Cross and Signac. Pointillism originated in late 1880's, when Georges Seurat started developing this technique. "A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte", one of his most famous works, took him two years to paint! Can you imagine that?
7. Sigmund Freud was a very famous psychoanalyst. Which art movement was based on his ideas?

Answer: Surrealism

Surrealism's objective was to reflect dreams and the unconscious feelings. Sigmund Freud, also known as "the father of psychoanalysis" knew eight languages: German, Hebrew, French, English, Spanish, Italian, Latin and Greek.
8. Who would be an example of a representative from the Cubist movement?

Answer: Pablo Picasso

Picasso was born in Spain in 1881 and died in France in 1973. Jose Ruiz Blasco, his father, was a drawing professor in a Spanish school. When he was only 15, Pablo already had his first workshop!
9. There is an art movement called Romanticism.

Answer: True

It was not only an artistic movement, but also literary and intellectual. Some people describe Romanticism as a counter-Enlightenment movement, as it was certainly opposed to the ideas of the European Enlightenment. Famous artists from Romanticism include J. M. W. Turner and Caspar David Friedrich.
10. Which two art movements would you most likely link to Marcel Duchamp?

Answer: Dadaism and Surrealism

Duchamp was a French artist, who died aged 81, in his birth country. Contrary to some people's beliefs, most of his famous "readymade" artworks were crafted by him, and not pre-fabricated! Pretty cool, huh?
