Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Colloquially speaking, what's a 'Rock Lobster'?

Answer: A twenty dollar note

Due to its red colour, the Australian twenty dollar note is referred to as a 'Rock Lobster' (particularly in Queensland) or even a 'Redback'. The fifty dollar note is sometimes called a 'Yellow Belly' - can you guess why?
2. 'Black snow' is, colloquially, what?

Answer: Ash from burning sugar cane

Sugar cane, when burnt, sends loads of ash into the air which can travel for miles before coming down somewhat like a snowfall. It's a real pain if you've just hung out your washing! Also called 'Bundaberg Snow' as Bundaberg is the heart of sugar cane country in Queensland.
3. If you 'Black Snake It' what do you do?

Answer: Go to bed without changing your clothes after work

Particularly in North Queensland and around Perth to go to bed in your work clothes is to 'Black Snake It'. Also in North Queensland it means to go to bed without having a bath.
4. What is, or was, a 'Brown Bomber'?

Answer: A parking inspector

In Sydney until the late 1990's the parking inspectors wore brown uniforms, they now wear grey uniforms and are referred to as 'Grey Ghosts'. Similarly, in Adelaide, the parking inspectors changed to blue uniforms and became 'Blue Bombers'.
5. What is 'Leichhardt Lawn', colloquially speaking?

Answer: Concrete

When used instead of having a lawn, concrete, especially if painted green, is referred to as 'Leichhardt Lawn', after the suburb in Sydney, or even 'Leichhardt Grass'.
6. If you were having a 'Maggot Bag' for lunch, what would you be having?

Answer: A meat pie

A 'Maggot Bag' with 'Blood' is a meat pie with sauce. This colloquialism is typical (in some circles) along the eastern and southern coasts of Australia - I'd love to tell you what they call a Vanilla Slice, but it's far more gross than 'Maggot Bag'!

Another slang term for a meat pie is 'Dogseye'.
7. What, colloquially speaking, is a 'Brown Sandwich'?

Answer: A bottle of beer

A 'Brown Sandwich' literally refers to a bottle of beer being a liquid lunch - typically used around Brisbane and Sydney and most commonly among tradespeople.
8. What, colloquially speaking, is 'Underground Mutton'?

Answer: Rabbit

Referring to rabbit as 'Underground Mutton' really came into its own during the First World War when food was in short supply.
9. If you were engaging in 'Cross-country Wrestling' what would you be doing, colloquially speaking?

Answer: Playing Rugby Union

Victorians particularly, refer to Rugby Union as 'Cross-country Wrestling' and, returning the favour, Aussie Rules is referred to as 'Cross-country Ballet'.
10. What's a 'Goat Boat', colloquially speaking?

Answer: A surf ski

'Goat Boat' is a derogatory term for a surf or wave ski as opposed to a 'Primate Pod', which is a surfboard.
