Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From the musical "Hairspray", how does "Motormouth" Maybelle describe herself during a party at her record store?

Answer: Big, Blonde And Beautiful

"Motormouth" Maybelle fully embraces her larger figure, and proudly sings about big, blonde and beautiful, while encouraging Edna Turnblad to celebrate her own fuller figure.

"Hairsray" began its Broadway run in 2002 with Harvey Fierstein playing Edna and Mary Bond Davis playing Maybelle.
2. Which song was not a part of the original 1971 musical "Grease" but was added to the 1993 revival in the West End, after being written for the film version in 1978?

Answer: Sandy

"Sandy" (1978) is not used in all stage productions of "Grease", with some companies preferring instead to stick to the original musical and use the song, "Alone at a Drive-In Movie" (1971).

In the 1993 production of the show, the song was sung by Danny played by Craig McLachlan and Sandy played by Debbie Gibson. Most productions though use it as a Danny solo song, as it is in the movie version.
3. Stripper Mimi and musician Roger sing which song when they first meet in the musical, "Rent"?

Answer: Light My Candle

"Light My Candle" (1994) is one of the many standout numbers from the show, highlighting Mimi's flirtatious nature and Roger's nervousness around women, as he tries to remember where he has seen her before.

"Rent" began life at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1994, and after a few cast changes, hit Broadway in 1996, with Adam Pascal playing Roger and Daphne Rubin-Vega playing Mimi.
4. Chita Rivera was the original Velma Kelly in the 1975 production of "Chicago". What does Velma sing to start the show off?

Answer: All That Jazz

Velma is a fan of jazz, but, as the musical is set in the 1920s, it's safe to say she never owned a Honda Jazz, probably much to her disappointment.

"Chicago" debuted in 1975, but its history goes back much further than that as it is based on the play of the same name, which premiered in 1926, at the height of the Jazz Age.
5. "Wicked" debuted on Broadway in 2003. Which song, the closing number to Act One, has become the signature song of the show?

Answer: Defying Gravity

What a cast the original Broadway show had, with Kristin Chenoweth playing Glinda and the great Idina Menzel playing Elphaba. The cast for the original West End production in 2006 wasn't bad either as Menzel reprised her role and was joined by Nigel Planer as the Wonderful Wizard of Oz and Miriam Margolyes as Madame Morrible.

"Defying Gravity" (2003) was used as the anthem to the Gay Pride event in 2007 in Los Angeles, the same year that Menzel released it as a single. Unfortunately, the record buying public weren't as entranced as the theatre going public and it peaked at number 60 in UK.
6. The musical, "Hamilton", premiered in 2015 to rave reviews. In which number does Alexander Hamilton present his hopes for the future and his wish to be remembered?

Answer: My Shot

"My Shot" sees Hamilton discussing the future with Marquis de Lafayette, Hercules Mulligan, John Laurens and Aaron Burr.

"Hamilton" was one of the first and certainly one of the finest rap/hip hop musicals ever made. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music and lyrics for the show, and starred as Alexander Hamilton during the show's Broadway run in 2015.
7. From the musical "Aida" comes a song in which Princess Amneris sings about her insecurities and how she counteracts them. What is this number called?

Answer: My Strongest Suit

"Aida", which premiered in 1998, was written by Tim Rice and Elton John and is based on the 1871 opera from Giuseppe Verdi. The musical tells the story of Aida, who falls in love with Egyptian captain, Radames, who is betrothed to Princess Amneris. Just to confuse matters, Aida is given as a gift to Amneris to be her new handmaiden.

The best known number from the show is probably "Written In The Stars" (1998), which became a top 30 hit on charts throughout the world when it was released as a single by Elton John and LeAnn Rimes in 1999. In the stage show, it is sung by Radames and Aida.
8. Which song from "Miss Saigon" ends with Chris drawing his revolver and pointing it at The Engineer?

Answer: The Deal

When U.S. Marine Chris decides to take Vietnamese bar girl, Kim back to the States with him, he meets with The Engineer to discuss a deal. The Engineer attempts to change the terms, resulting in Chris pulling his gun.

"Miss Saigon", which is based on Puccini's opera, "Madame Butterfly" (1904), premiered in 1989 with Jonathan Pryce as The Engineer and Simon Bowman as Chris.
9. The opening number to Act II of stage show, "The Producers", takes place when Leo and Ulla find themselves alone in the office belonging to Max. What is this song called?

Answer: That Face

"The Producers" which debuted in 2001 is an hilarious stage musical and has attracted some big name stars. The original Broadway production saw Matthew Broderick play Leo, with Cady Huffman as Ulla and the wonderful Nathan Lane as Max. "That Face" is the number in which Leo and Ulla start to fall in love after Leo notices Ulla's perfect posterior.

Subsequent productions have seen comedian Peter Kay star in the 2007 UK touring production and performance poet, Phill Jupitus star when the show toured UK in 2015.
10. This was not only a song from "South Pacific", but also a character, played by the incredible Juanita Hall in the original 1949 Broadway production. Which song is this?

Answer: Bloody Mary

Bloody Mary is the only civilian woman on the South Pacific island on which the American forces find themselves stationed. She was brilliantly played by Juanita Hall, who won a Tony award for the role in 1950, becoming the first African American to win a Tony for best supporting actress.

In the musical, the song "Bloody Mary" is sung by the American forces about Bloody Mary the person, and their feeling for her, despite the fact "Her skin is tender as Dimaggio's glove."
