Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To puff up?

Answer: Sufflate

This is an old word (first used in 1616: OED) It means much the same as inflate, but can sometimes carry the sense of being puffed up with self-importance.
2. An ecclesiastical assistant.

Answer: Suffragan

The word is mostly used in the phrase "suffragan bishop", an assistant to a more senior bishop. By the same definition, all ordinary bishops are suffragans to an Archbishop. They were called that because they could be called to a synod to give their suffrage or votes. It can also imply giving support or witness.
An assistant at a lower level is an acolyte.
3. A formal name for a bush.

Answer: Suffrutex

This is another word for a "subshrub", a small plant that is woody at the base but has herbaceous growth above. It is sometimes called a prostrate shrub. It is a Latin word, and horticulturists use a lot of them, don't they?
The plural is subfrutices, in the same way that vortices means more than one vortex.
4. To spread out, or through, something.

Answer: Suffuse

It means to permeate something, or spread through it. When you blush (if you ever do), your cheeks are suffused with colour. A scene may be suffused with light.
5. I think that will be just about enough.

Answer: Suffice

When enough is done or provided to satisfy an immediate requirement, it is said to suffice. "Twixt such friends as we, few words suffice" - Shakespeare.
It is often used to indicate slight disappointment; it may suffice, but I'd rather have had more.
6. A linguistic add-on.

Answer: Suffix

Letters added to the end of a word to produce a different form of a verb, or a derivative of a basic word. For example, with the verb "to play", we have:
He plays. The "s" suffix indicates third person present tense.
I played. The "ed" suffix indicates the past tense.
On the other hand a suffix may be used to form an entirely different word.
Playable, playful, playmate are derivatives of the word play.
Letters added at the front of a word are a prefix. E.g. foreplay, or possibly, like this quiz, childsplay.
7. Something allowed on this is not definitely forbidden, although possibly frowned upon. Another meaning, believe it or not, is temporary wharfage.

Answer: Sufferance

If something is permitted, but not enthusiastically, it is said to be allowed "on sufferance". A wharf or quay where goods may be landed before any duty is paid, is a "sufferance wharf".
It can also mean pain patiently endured.
8. The right to vote.

Answer: Suffrage

A political argument that has taken place in many countries over many years is, who shall have the right to vote, especially in national or local elections. The suffragettes who in Britain argued for women's right to vote took their name from this word, which derives from the Latin suffragium, a ballot. Voting is sometimes done using pebbles or balls (black-balling indicates a veto), and the Latin word may in turn derive from suffrago, the ankle bone of a horse, which was apparently used as a voting pebble by the Romans.
9. To get rid of pests by using upwards drifting smoke.

Answer: Suffumigate

Burning herbs for example and allowing the curative or cleansing fumes to drift upwards is called suffumigation.
10. To stifle.

Answer: Suffocate

Other words for the same oppressive act are choke and smother. It comes from the Latin suffocare, to choke, literally to put under the throat. The term may also be used more generally; spreading weeds may suffocate a more desirable flower.
