Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Lizard
Answer: Fanfoot
A kind of gecko from North Africa, once supposed by Egyptians to have venom in its toes. Fanfoot is also the name of a European moth.
2. West African peoples
Answer: Fante
Also spelled Fanti, these people live on the seaboard of the old Gold Coast (now Ghana). Traditionally membership of a clan is by matrilineal descent, and after marriage it is apparently common for husband and wife to continue living with their original clans. There are many small Fante states, each led by a paramount chief.
3. Flag
Answer: Fanion
A fanion is a small flag used to mark a surveying station, or military supply dumps. In modern times the name is also used for the team pennants identifying different football teams - the ones that opposing captains exchange before the match begins.
4. Dance for two
Answer: Fandango
A lively Spanish dance for two people, the name also refers to the type of music that traditionally accompanies the dance. It is also the name of an American corporation that sells cinema tickets.
5. Musical assortment
Answer: Fantasia
A piece of music, usually classical, with few if any formal restrictions. Well-known examples include Ralph Vaughn Williams' "Fantasia on a theme by Thomas Tallis", Jaoquin Rodrigo's "Fantasia para un gentilhombre", and famous at the London Promenade Concerts, Sir Henry Wood's "Fantasia on British Sea Songs".
The name was used for the ground-breaking animated musical film of 1940 by Walt Disney, and its sequel "Fantasia 2000".
6. Chinese gambling game
Answer: Fan Tan
This is the traditional Chinese gambling game. A square is drawn on a table or the ground. A big handful of buttons, coins or other small objects is tipped onto the square and covered with a metal bowl. Players then bet by placing their chips along one of the sides of the square (numbered one to four).
The bowl is lifted and the croupier removes buttons from the heap four at a time, until either one, two, three of four buttons are left. That number determines the winners. Simple, but apparently very addictive.
7. Inhabitants of a Greek enclave
Answer: Fanariots
Sometimes spelled Phanariots. Constantinople was once occupied by Greeks, and since the time of the Byzantine emperors the richer Greeks have lived in the quarter called Phanar. They once had much power, but these days, in Istanbul, none at all.
8. Temple
Answer: Fane
A holy place, or shrine, or a temple or even a church. The word "profane" derives from the same root, but does not indicate being for something sacred as you might expect, but in fact means the opposite, to desecrate something holy.
9. Lighthouse
Answer: Fanal
A small lighthouse or beacon, or perhaps just the light source inside, may be called a fanal. It is also the name of a fiery red hardy perennial.
10. Very enthusiastic person
Answer: Fanatic
A fanatic is someone who holds extreme and usually unalterable views on a subject which is usually of a religious or political nature. It may also be an uncritical supporter of a sports team - hence the word "fan".
