Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Henry made these young men his special guard

Answer: Gentlemen-at-Arms

The troops known today as "Gentlemen-at-Arms" only appear at ceremonial occasions as the Sovereign's bodyguard. The "Troop of Gentlemen" was originally created by King Henry VIII of England in 1509 as a group of young nobles who acted as his personal guards in battle and on his travels. Over the years they became less practical and more ceremonial.

The full name is "The Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms". It consists of five Officers and 27 Gentlemen.
2. Small digitigrade carnivorous mammal

Answer: Genet

Digitigrades walk on their toes (digits). Carnivores eat other animals. There are over a dozen varieties of these small cat-like animals, distributed all over Africa.
3. Comes between a family and a species

Answer: Genus

The normal way in which living things are described using the Linnaean binomial system, is simply to use the genus and species. For example domestic cats are felis catus, where felis is the genus and catus the species. Taking it one step higher, the family is felidae, which includes all the cat-like animals.
4. Concerning the family, although it's not an "ology"

Answer: Genealogy

Most people have a casual interest in their Family History, but the serious study of ancestry and relationships is called Genealogy. It is commonly spelled incorrectly as "geneology", but I can find no explanation of why it is an -alogy and not an -ology.
5. A yarn - as told in Belgium?

Answer: Genappe

A kind of worsted yarn, used for braids and fringes. It is named after the town in Belgium where it was made in the 19th century.
6. Spirit of the juniper tree?

Answer: Geneva

The spirit gin is distilled from grain or malt. When flavoured with juniper berries it is called Geneva, or Hollands Gin.
7. A broad canvas?

Answer: Genoa

Single-masted sailing craft use sails in front of the mast to increase the efficiency of the mainsail which is behind the mast. Such sails are known as jibs. A large form of jib which overlaps the mast is called a genoa, or genny, and is used in light or moderate winds to increase the speed of the boat.
8. In the beginning...

Answer: Genesis

The first book in the Bible of course begins with those words (In the English translation). Its first part describes the creation of the world and man, up to his fall, while the second part is a history of the first Hebrew fathers. I'm also told it is the name of a rock band.
9. Mountain bloomer

Answer: Gentian

These brilliant blue flowers grow in mountainous areas mostly in the northern hemisphere but also in New Zealand and South America. There are some 400 species, about 60 of which are in North America. The genus is Gentiana, and the most important species is Gentiana lutia from the Swiss and Bavarian Alps, which has medicinal properties.
10. A spirited easterner?

Answer: Genie

In Arabic mythology the Jinni are supernatural beings below the level of angels and devils. Also written as Genii, an individual Genie occurs in many stories originating in the east, where it may carry out the wishes of he person who summoned it. You have to be careful though what you ask for.
