Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Send to repair this European port.

Answer: Ostend

This is a crossword type clue, an anagram of "send to".
Ostend is a busy port on the Belgian coast.
2. Reasonable, apparently.

Answer: Ostensible

An ostensible purpose is the apparent or avowed one. The word is often used to indicate some kind of doubt as to the real or underlying reason or purpose.
3. A skeleton science?

Answer: Osteology

Osteology is the science or study of animal bones, especially human ones. Not to be confused with osteopathy.
4. Shun, or banish to an English city.

Answer: Ostracise

If a person is ostracised they are excluded from society usually by general agreement. The word shun describes the same thing, while banish and exile express similar intentions.
The phrase "sent to Coventry" is another way of saying it. Victims are ignored, not greeted or spoken to, and generally treated as though they do not exist.
5. Not an explosion of bones though.

Answer: Osteoblast

Quite the reverse of an explosion, an osteoblast is a cell involved in the formation of bones. Working in groups which make up an osteon, they secrete bone substance during bone formation or repair.
6. Manipulative treatment.

Answer: Osteopathy

The treatment of some bodily disorders by the manipulation of bones and joints by fingers, is known as Osteopathy. It was originally based on the theory that all diseases are due to abnormalities in or near joints, which can be treated without drugs.

Although now an "alternative" branch of medicine, there is general agreement that is can be effective in treating lower back pain, but less so about its usefulness with other disorders.
7. Horsy person.

Answer: Ostler

The person who looks after your horse for you after your ride is an ostler.
In the days of horse-drawn transport, every inn had ostlers who would take over the job of unshackling the horses from a coach or carriage, groom, feed and settle them down. For a stage coach they would also harness up fresh horses to continue the journey.
In American English the word is spelled hostler, the h being pronounced.
8. Making a splendid show, whether you need to or not.

Answer: Ostentation

Ostentation is described as vain show, or ambitious display, although it can also be used to describe ceremonial state occasions.
9. Sore bones?

Answer: Osteitis

Osteitis is inflammation of bone, causing pain in joints or the bone itself. It may or may not be infectious. Osteitis pubis is non-infectious inflammation in the pelvic area, often suffered by athletes.
10. Avian that's fast, but grounded.

Answer: Ostrich

Wild ostriches are found in Africa and Arabia. They are the largest living birds, the male sometimes reaching a height of 8 feet, and a weight of 300 lb. Not surprisingly they cannot fly, but in running can reach a speed of 40 m.p.h.
They do not hide their heads in the sand when threatened. The reason for this myth is possibly that from a distance their heads, which are small compared to their bodies, cannot be clearly distinguished.
