Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who appeared as Elphaba, Nessarose, G(a)linda, and Fiyero in the Original Broadway cast, respectively (careful of the order)?

Answer: Idina Menzel, Michelle Federer, Kristin Chenoweth, Nobert Leo Butz

Stephanie J. Block did the workshops for the role of Elphaba in "Wicked". She was eventually replaced by Idina Menzel, because the people who created "Wicked" wanted an actress who had appeared in other musicals, like "Aida" and "Rent".
2. In the phenomenal song "Defying Gravity", Elphaba sings a series of lyrics in the air on her broomstick. One line she says is "... As someone told me lately, everyone deserves a chance to fly...". Who had said this to Elphaba before she sang this song?

Answer: the Wizard

The Wizard says in "Sentimental Man", "So Elphaba, I'd like to raise you high
'Cuz I think everyone deserves the chance to fly." This is right before he uses Elphaba to make the flying monkeys, and Elphaba runs away with the "Grimmerie". Then she uses it to enchant the broomstick and flies, just like the wizard "wanted". Joel Grey plays the Wizard.
3. Who or what was Elphaba named after?

Answer: L. Frank Baum

If you take Lyman Frank Baum's initials, L.F.B, change the "f" to a "ph", and add some vowels, you get Elphaba. This is how Gregory Maguire named Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West. Gregory Maguire doesn't even have a daughter, the Wicked Witch of the West is not her actual name and you can't get Elphaba from that.

The London Fire Brigade's initials are also L.F.B., but Elphaba wasn't named for them.
4. What are Elphaba, Glinda, and Fiyero's last names in order?

Answer: Thropp, Upland, Tiggular

We find out Elphaba's last name when she goes to the wizard and is asked "Who are you and why do you seek me?" Galinda introduces herself with her full name, Galinda Upland of the Upper Uplands, when the students are admiring her after singing "Dear Old Shiz". We find out Fiyero's last name in Scene 7 when he enters with Averic and Galinda points him out be saying, "Biq, do you know who that is? That's Fiyero Tiggular, the Winkie Prince whose reputation is so scandalacious!" Boq (or Biq, as Galinda calls him) is the munchkin who is later turned into the tinman when his heart starts shrinking, whose name Galinda is always mispronouncing.
5. Complete the lyrics from "The Wizard and I." "Unlimited My _______ is unlimited And I've just had a _______ almost like a prophecy..."

Answer: future, vision

The "Unlimited" lyrics appear in "The Wizard and I", "Defying Gravity", and "For Good."

"The Wizard and I":
Elphaba:
"Unlimited
My future is unlimited
And I've just had a vision almost like a prophecy
I know, it sounds truly crazy
And true, the vision's hazy
But I swear someday there'll be
A celebration throughout Oz
That's all to do with me!"
She sings this when Madame Morrible admits her into the sorcery class and she is going to meet the Wizard finally- "What I've waited for since- since birth!".

"Defying Gravity":
Elphaba:
"Unlimited
Together we're unlimited
Together we'll be the greatest team there's ever been, Glinda
Dreams the way we planned 'em..."
Glinda:
"If we work in tandem"
Both:
"There's no fight we cannot win"

"For Good":
Elphaba:
"I'm limited
Just look at me
I'm limited
And just look at you
You can do all I couldn't do, Glinda
So now's it's up to you
For the both of us
Now it's up to you"
6. What does Fiyero say when he sees Elphaba after her makeover in "Popular"?

Answer: "You've been Galinda-fied!"

When Elphaba walks into class the next day after her makeover, Elphaba walks in outrageously dressed and flipping her hair. "What?" She asks Fiyero. And he replies, "Nothing, it just... You've been "Galinda-fied". You don't have to do that, you know?"
7. What did Idina Menzel change her name from when she became an actress?

Answer: Idina Mentzel

She changed her name from Idina Mentzel to Idina Menzel to avoid mispronunciations from fans. Dillamond is the surname of the professor that is a goat at Shiz that gets taken away because he is an Animal, Maureen Johnson is the character she originated in "Rent", and Mensel is a made-up name. Idina Menzel used to be a wedding singer, but she auditioned for a musical in the season when there are not a lot of weddings, and got the part! Her name is pronounced UH-dee-nah Men-ZEL.
8. Who wrote the book, screenplay, music, and lyrics for "Wicked"?

Answer: Winnie Holzman and Steven Schwartz

Winnie Holzman wrote the book and screenplay. Steven Schwartz wrote the music and lyrics to "Wicked". He has also written music for "Godspell" and "Pippin". Winnie Holzman has written book and screenplay for many other plays and is a television writer.
9. When Galinda and Elphaba share secrets, what are the secrets?

Answer: Galinda: "Fiyero and I are going to be married!" Elphaba: "It's my fault my sister is the way she is."

At first Elphaba says "My father hates me." Galinda gasps. Then she says, "No, that's not my secret. It's my fault..." "What is?" Galinda asks. "That my sister is the way she is", Elphaba finishes. Galinda's secret is that she is going to marry Fiyero, but he doesn't know yet.
10. What word is NOT a unique Ozian word said in "Wicked", the musical adaption?

Answer: prettliest

In the musical "Wicked", Ozians have odd, unique words they say throughout the show. In "No One Mourns the Wicked", Glinda sings "Fellow Ozians, let us be be glad, let us be grateful, let us rejoicify that goodness could subdue!" In "Dear Old Shiz", the students sing, "O hallowed halls and vine draped walls, the proudliest sight there is...".

In "What is this Feeling?" the students all take Galinda's side against Elphaba and sing, "Poor Galinda, forced to reside with someone so disgusting-ified! We just want to tell you we're all on your side!" This is the end of my FANTASTICIFIED "WICKED" QUIZ!
