Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Acrisius, king of Argos, had a beautiful daughter named Danae. Once Acrisius' wife died, the only heir to the throne was his daughter. Of course, like most Greek kings, Acrisius wanted a son. Acrisius went to an Oracle, who told him that he would be killed. Although the prophecy would eventually come true, Acrisius tried to postpone it. Who would kill him?

Answer: His grandson

Acrisius would one day be killed by his grandson, although it would be an accident. Prophecies always come true, though, no matter how many times someone postpones it.
2. Once Acrisius found out the bad news, he locked Danaë away in a tower made of bronze. The god Zeus came down from Olympus in a shower of gold. He impregnated Danae. Some time later, she bore a son named Perseus. What does Perseus mean in Ancient Greek?

Answer: avenger

After Acrisius heard the prophecy that his grandson would kill him, he totally freaked out, and locked Danaë in a tower of bronze. Zeus heard Danaë's prayers, and came down in a shower of gold, falling directly into her lap.
3. As soon as Acrisius found out that his daughter had a boy, he was furious! He took both of them and threw them into the sea. Where did mother and son land?

Answer: The island of Seriphos

Perseus and Danaë washed up on the island of Seriphos, where they met a kind fisherman named Dictys. Dictys cared for Danaë and Perseus for many years after.
4. The king of the island, Polydectes, wanted to marry Danae, but was always stopped by Perseus. To get him out of the way, Polydectes threw a big party, saying he was going to marry the princess of a distant village. The price to attend the wedding was one horse. Unfortunately, Perseus was very poor and couldn't afford a horse. What did Polydectes order Perseus to bring instead?

Answer: The head of Medusa

Polydectes sent Perseus on this mission so that he could marry Danae. Polydectes expected Perseus to die while he was on his quest. No one had ever returned from Medusa's lair alive!
5. Medusa had a date with the sea god, Poseidon. Before their date ended, Poseidon and Medusa slept together in a temple. This is the temple of the goddess who was in charge of wisdom. Whose temple was this?

Answer: Athena's

A Gorgon was a vicious, female monster with snakes for hair, bronze claws, and - most importantly - a gaze so powerful that it could turn men to stone (if they looked directly upon her).
6. Medusa was not the only Gorgon out there. She had two sisters, who also turned into Gorgons after Medusa's date with Poseidon. What were these sisters' names?

Answer: Stheno and Euryale

These two sisters were immortal, while Medusa was the mortal of the three of them. All three of them lived inside a cave, far from civilization.
7. Before Perseus could get to Medusa, he ran into these three sisters. He asked them where he could find Medusa. The three sisters asked him for gold, which he gave to them. What were these sisters called?

Answer: The Graeae

The Graeae all shared one eye and one tooth, so they were always arguing and fighting over who got what. To make them say where he would find Medusa, Perseus held onto the eye and the tooth until they told him where the Gorgon was.
8. Before he met up with Medusa, Perseus met up with two of the Olympian gods. One of these gods gave him a pair of winged sandals. The other god gave Perseus a sack so he could put Medusa's head into it. Who were these two gods?

Answer: Hermes and Athena

Hermes provided Perseus with the winged sandals, while Athena gave him a sack, which would allow Perseus to put Medusa's head into it, and fly home with it.
9. Once Perseus cut off Medusa's head, he released her children. One of them was her son Chrysaor, who wore golden armor. Her other son was a beautiful, white horse that could fly. What was this horse's name?

Answer: Pegasus

Pegasus was a beautiful white horse that could fly. Eventually, he would be tamed by Bellerophon, another hero, who tried flying Pegasus to Olympus.
10. On his way back to Seriphos, Perseus caught a glimpse of a girl chained to a rock. Her mother, who was a vain queen, bragged that she and her daughter were prettier than Poseidon's daughters. Poseidon became angry, and said he would unleash a sea monster on the land, unless the king and queen sacrificed their daughter (the girl on the rock). What was her name?

Answer: Princess Andromeda

Andromeda was the princess of the island of Ethiopia, daughter of King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia. After Cassiopeia bragged that she was more beautiful than Poseidon's Nereides (sea nymphs), Poseidon said he would unleash a horrible monster named Cetus (not the Kraken, sorry) onto the land.

In order to appease the monster so it wouldn't destroy the land, the king and queen sacrificed Andromeda to the monster. Finally, once Perseus came along, he turned the monster to stone, rescued Andromeda, then married her.
