Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was originally slated to play Elphaba?

Answer: Stephanie J. Block

Idina Menzel was the original Broadway cast Elphaba, but she wasn't first choice. Block was supposed to portray Elphaba, but due to scheduling constraints, she only got to be the understudy. However, she went on to star in the national tour.
2. When the show was still in workshop in California, where would Kristin Chenoweth and Winnie Holzman repeatedly run into each other?

Answer: Macy's

Kristin is a shopaholic, and was constantly at Macy's. Winnie became a nervous eater and gained enough weight to outgrow her clothes multiple times. Seeing each other at Macy's was the only time the two women had contact.
3. Who did Idina Menzel depend on when the play was in workshop and lines were continually being changed?

Answer: Her dresser

Idina would give her dresser post-it-notes with the revised lines on them, and she would have her dresser run them with her while she was backstage.
4. True or False: "Dancing Through Life" was always in the production.

Answer: False

"Dancing Through Life" is a rewrite of another song. The original didn't have as much dancing or chorus involvement. It was originally called "Which Way's The Party?"
5. Which song did Stephen Schwartz claim was hardest to write?

Answer: For Good

He procrastinated and wrote "For Good" last because it needed to be perfect in order to reflect on Glinda and Elphaba's relationship.
6. What was the original method of application for Elphaba's green makeup?

Answer: Airbrushing

It was too easy for actors and actresses near the airbrushing station to aspirate the paint particles. This rendered them unable to sing, so they switched to a sponge-brush method.
7. What shows Madame Morrible's progression as an evil character?

Answer: Her receding hairline

This was a deliberate occurence, suggested by the costumer.
8. When Elphaba "defies gravity", how does she do it?

Answer: Using a hydraulic lift system

The hydraulic lift system is hidden by vast amounts of black fabric, which is assumed to be Elphaba's cape.
9. What type of base is the green makeup used by actresses playing Elphaba?

Answer: Water

The actresses don't break out because it's water based and doesn't clog pores.
10. How long does it take to apply Elphaba's green makeup?

Answer: 7 minutes

When the show started, it took the head makeup artist around 35 minutes to "greenify" Elphaba. However with actress and artist working together, the time was shaved down to just 7 minutes.
