Henry Guilfoyle had fallen on bad times. He was an alcoholic who had taken shelter in a condemned building to consume his drink. This was to be his last drink.

Harris taught art at the local comprehensive school. His first contact with the rats was when he had to take a pupil to hospital. The pupil claimed to have been bitten by a rat on his way to school.

The rats were able to detect ultrasound. It was also known they could be gassed. Later the source of the rats was traced back to a dead professor's house where he had kept large mutated rats and bred from them.
