Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which county does the earthquake strike?

Answer: Wiltshire

It says so in the second sentence of the book (and even in some editions the blurb)! The earthquake strikes early on a morning and swallows up half the village including John Holman, an employee of the British government.
2. For which governmental department does John Holman work?

Answer: Department of the Environment

John works for the Department of the Environment, as mentioned during the second chapter and numerous other instances throughout the novel. Holman is investigating the Ministry of Defence when the earthquake occurs.
3. What saved Holman from the affects of the 'Fog'?

Answer: A blood transfusion

Holman fell in the crater in the village and was affected by the 'fog'. However, he was given a blood transfusion for another injury he sustained. This meant he was later immune and could enter the 'fog'.
4. One of the sub-plots features a man called Herbert, who is very fond of his pigeons. What is the name of his favourite pigeon?

Answer: Claude

He is eventually killed by the birds, as they were affected by the 'fog'. There is a 'lovely' description of them pecking his eyes out!
5. In other sub-plot a man named Edward Smallwood is affected the 'fog'. What activity had been undertaking when it hit?

Answer: Fishing

He is a thirty-five year old, who works at a bank and lives with his parents. The mist causes him to kick people up the bum and lock his boss in a safe.
6. Why did John call his girlfriend Casey? (even though her name was Christina)

Answer: It was the name of his dog

A moment of humour in this rather gruesome novel!
7. Which London landmark does Captain Ennard fly the plane into?

Answer: GPO tower

He had been affected by the 'fog' when visiting the New Forest with his wife.
8. The aeroplane crash was one of the major disasters in the book; which of the following was not an event that occurred?

Answer: Winchester Cathedral is bombed

The 'fog' causes a great amount of havoc, but instead of causing Winchester Cathedral to be destroyed it hides inside of it, as Holman finds out when he is sent out to destroy it.
9. What is the name of the woman who, contemplating suicide, visits Bournemouth; however she backs out at the last minute? (not that this did her much good)

Answer: Mavis

Mavis attempts suicide in the sea, but backs out and tries to return to shore. But, the 'fog' has visited Bournemouth and driven the inhabitants mad, making them all commit suicide themselves, taking Mavis with them.
10. So what actually is this 'fog'?

Answer: The Broadmeyer Mutation

It was created as a form of biological weapon. Ryker is the character who describes it and how it makes people mad!
11. What does the government say this mutation is?

Answer: Radiaton from the sea

The government decide to lie to the public to cover up their mistakes, preferring to deal with the situation before dishing out blame.
12. Which chemical did the government spray the mutation with, to prevent it from spreading?

Answer: Calcium Chloride

They believed it had worked, to begin with, as the fog did disappear. However, it was just hiding.
13. After reappearing, which city did the mutation attack?

Answer: London

The army had no time to clear the city, as it suddenly reappears after Corporal Wilcox finds it.
14. What was the name of the DI who was sent to babysit Holman?

Answer: DI Barrow

He is extremely resentful of his post and has a great disliking for John.
15. What did MceLellan give to his family so that they would not suffer the mutation?

Answer: Sleeping pills

He chalked a message outside his home to alert the authorities. "PLEASE HELP. HAVE GIVEN FAMILY OVERDOSE TO KEEP FROM HARM. PLEASE HELP."
16. Another animal attack, this time on Irma Bidmead. Which animal attacked her?

Answer: Cats

She was a regular old cat lady; her cats ate her in her sleep.
17. What scene does Holman not witness when the city goes mad?

Answer: Children eating birds

There are many descriptions of acts that the mad people do that Holman and Mason witness on their path through the city in the devastation vehicle. Most are very gruesome.
18. Does Holman destroy the 'fog'?

Answer: no

It is actually Ryker and Peters and, yes, they do destroy it.
19. Who, right at the end of the novel, attacks Holman and Casey?

Answer: Barrow

DI Barrow, now mad, tried to kill Casey and John at their apartment after the 'fog' was destroyed.
20. What do the army and the government do to try to regain control of London?

Answer: Spray chemicals to make the population sleep

In the end, Casey, John and the whole of London are sent to sleep. And that is the end of James Herbert's horror novel!
