Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name Hal chose for the ship-mounted crossbow he built with Ingvar?

Answer: The Mangler

All names listed were suggested by crew members. Big Bessie was considered too 'girlie'. The god Gorlag did not have a hammer and so was dismissed. Although Tharon as god of thunder did have a hammer, the name was considered too classical. Hal decided to go with the Mangler which was the description for it used by Thorn.
2. What was Hal's radical alteration to the Heron's design?

Answer: A centreboard

Hal's idea to fit a centreboard upset Stig as it involved making a hole in the hull next to the keel. Hal planned to build a coffer dam-type casing in order to support the centreboard and prevent the ship being flooded. The centreboard helped the ship resist the usual drift downwind when it was sailing close to the wind. This meant that it could sail upwind quicker and with fewer tacks.
3. What method did Zavac use to capture the Gallican trading ship?

Answer: Pretending the Viper was in distress

Zavac had the Raven sitting just over the horizon while the Viper pretended to be disabled and in danger of sinking. Using a simple code by flashing sunlight with a mirror, Zavac was able to learn when the bait had been taken. The Viper was loaded with pirates which stormed the rescuing ship and the Raven then appeared to finish the job.
4. What was Zavac after when he decided to attack the town of Limmat?

Answer: Emeralds from the town's mine

On questioning the Gallican captain, Zavac learned that the town had a secret emerald mine and decided that raiding the town would be a good idea. He first sought pirate reinforcements and then tricked his way into the protected harbour. He took over the town and kept the miners at work on a rich seam of emeralds until the seam was exhausted.
5. What happened to Thorn's old sheepskin vest?

Answer: Hal used it for padding in the ship

Hal 'borrowed' Thorn's old sheepskin vest to pad out the centreboard casing and to help prevent water sloshing into the ship. Thorn was less than happy when he discovered this and Hal readily agreed to buy a new one when they went for supplies. He had to borrow the money off Thorn in order to pay for the new vest.
6. For the assault on Limmat, how was the Wolfwind crew to get through the shallow waters of the marshes?

Answer: Using an unladen Wolfwind

Hal recognised that a lengthy wade through the marshes in full battle gear was not the best way to prepare the Wolfwind's crew for battle. Stripping the Wolfwind of excess equipment and ballast stones allowed the ship to go through the shallow marsh waters without grounding. In effect this turned the Wolfwind into a large skiff.
7. How did Hal propose to get through the beach gate?

Answer: Set fire to it

In order to set it alight, Hal had Jesper fix a bladder of oil to the gate one night. During the assault, Lydia and Hal between them managed to set fire to the gate from the Heron. A ram was then used to break down the weakened door.
8. How did the assault on the pirates in Limmat start?

Answer: A Mangler attack on the eastern tower

Hal started by attacking the harbour towers from the Heron primarily to create a diversion. This allowed the Wolfwind crew and Barat's men to have the element of surprise during their assaults. In fact Barat's men got over the pallisade unchallenged. Once the towers had been knocked out, the Heron went around to the beach gate.
9. How did Zavac respond to the co-ordinated attacks?

Answer: Escaped on the Raven

Zavac had no particular reason to remain in the town to defend it against the attackers. Having collected a reasonable pile of emeralds, he chose to abandon the other pirate crews, set fire to their ships and escape on the Raven.
10. How did Hal save the Wolfwind from sinking?

Answer: Used one of the Heron's sails to patch the hole

Hal's crew joined the Wolfwind crew in bailing out the ship. However it was not until the sail was used with a shield to plug the hole that the crews were able to save the Wolfwind. Once safe, they were able to tow the ship to the beach.
