Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An easy one: He is first and foremost a teacher, this First Disciple married and fathered two women who would have important roles to play in history. Originally a vagabond and a thief, the God Aldur instilled respect, courtesy, and inspired this man to be who he is today. What was his original name?

Answer: Garath

Originally called 'Garath', which meant 'of the village of Gara', Belgarath is Aldur's first disciple. He has many vices yet he is one of the greatest, most revered AND feared person in their world. He married Poledra the Wolf and is father to twin daughters Polgara and Beldaran. Beldaran he gave to Riva Iron-Grip to be wife and mother of Riva's line, the line of Rivan Kings and protectors of the Orb of Aldur (Cthrag Yaska in the East). Polgara has been tasked with protection of the heirs of Riva and Beldaran until the Chosen One, Bel/Garion, was born. Belgarath is seven thousand years old and is Garion's ultimate ancestor, his grandfather.
2. This poor misshapen one was thrown out of his village when he was born but his mother pitied him and went to the woods to continue feeding him. When the villagers found out, they probably killed the woman. But whatever the reason is, this person had to forage for his own food at a very young age. He could not live with other humans because his malformity were a source of ridicule and cause to throw stones. Who is this extremely intelligent sorcerer?

Answer: Beldin

He's a dwarf, a humpback, and has the vilest vocabulary around. No one can deny, though, that he is also extremely intelligent and smart, able to figure out things and find reasons and answers for the questions he asks. Aldur's first lesson for him was to learn to accept love (read Belgarath's autobiography).

He invented the blue-banded hawk, a form he favors, and ended up marrying Vella, a Nadrak woman. He and Polgara have a deep love that they express by finding the harshest insult they can give to each other.
3. A VERY simple one: twin sorcerers.

Answer: Beltira and Belkira

So entwined together, they always share their thoughts and finish each others' sentences. Timid and nice people, they used to be Alorn shepherds before becoming Aldur's disciple. Belgarath and Beldin often enter their storehouses for their ale as well as ask them for food since they can cook so well. Polgara's learned how to cook from them. Belgarath once mentioned that the twins had an abiding need to feed everyone so they even leave some food for the wild tame animals that live in the Vale of Aldur.
4. This Melcenian is very urbane and a direct opposite of Beldin, neat-ness wise. Also very smart and intelligent, he and Beldin enjoy their debates, although Belgarath once remarked that they must have done it within shouting distance because the dwarf refuses to bathe and the Melcenian hates dirt. Whom am I talking about?

Answer: Belmakor

Unfortunately, he didn't live very long and killed himself some time after Belsambar did.
5. Coming from the enemy's side of the world and one of Torak's followers, this person from the east was nevertheless called to serve as Aldur's Disciple. In the First War of the Gods, his suggestion concerning fire was most advantageous.

Answer: Belsambar

Like Belmakor, he caused himself to cease existing when his post-war depression became too much for him to bear.
6. Who is the most recent addition to Aldur's disciples?

Answer: Durnik

I wonder if he'll be called Beldurnik? Durnik is a Sendar to his fingertips and the symbol on his medallion, a hammer, seems to symbolize his skills as a smith and, basically, an all-around guy. He was given the power of the Will and the Word when he started his second life and married Polgara. Known in the prophecies as "The Man With Two Lives", he was the sacrifice the first meeting between Belgarion and Torak needed.
7. This second disciple overestimated his skills in subterfuge and, in the end, betrayed his brothers and went over to the enemy. Who's the second God that Belzedar served?

Answer: Torak

This hit Belgarath pretty bad because he felt that he could have averted it had he paid attention to how Zedar felt and reacted to the Orb and Torak. His greatest purpose in this world, though, was to introduce to the world a better and benevolent God in the form of Eriond.

In return, he was sentenced to a lifetime imprisonment in rock when Belgarath stuffed him down there and left him there for all eternity. Hm... Not that good a bargain, eh? But, like Belgarath mentioned, all you have to do is list down all his transgressions and Belgarath's actions would become understandable.
8. One of the most important rules for gods and sorcerers alike is that you cannot and never should unmake anything. The Universe will not accept you to unmake anything it went to all the trouble to create. Unfortunately, this magician forgot that cardinal rule when something he saw scared him so much that he said the forbidden words "be not". Whom am I referring to?

Answer: Ctuchik

In "Magician's Gambit", while Belgarath and Ctuchik were pitting their will against each other in a long-overdue combat, Garion could see into Ctuchik's mind and feel the other's fear of him touching the Orb. So Garion then reached out towards the Orb, pretending to hold it when Ctuchik screamed "be not!" What resulted detonated the entire mountainside where Ctuchik was and knocked Belgarath unconscious. "Magician" is also a term of contempt in their particular society so that's what Belgarath always calls Ctuchik.
9. An ugly, pie-bald sorcerer, this disciple was the rival of another of Torak's disciples. Terribly afraid that Belgarath's deformed brother would catch him and do interesting things with a hook, he rarely left his tower.

Answer: Urvon

He was crazy, terrified of Beldin, and the last we see of him is that he's going to be brought into the demon dimension.
10. The Chosen One, the Child of Light, Belgarion, King of Riva, Overlord of the West, Lord of the Western Sea, Godslayer, the fruit of the line of Riva and Beldaran, grandson to Belgarath, nephew of Polgara, this many-named youth was just an ordinary scullion boy when first we meet him. What was his original name?

Answer: Garion

I wonder why they named the series "The Belgariad" when it doesn't seem to refer to anyone we know. Anyway, "The Belgariad" is the story of Belgarion, whose many names are mentioned above. I'm not entirely sure if he's to be considered a disciple of Aldur like all the other Bels and Polgara, but I'm guessing he sort of is.
