The Clan thought totem spirits made babies not themselves, so they thought a Cave Bear was more powerful than a Woolly Rhinoceros to be able to overcome the Cave Lion.

Iza had a secret remedy to stop a woman from conceiving. She told Ayla that she must never tell a man because they would put a stop to it. The secret was a tea, to be taken in the morning, containing Antelope Sage and Golden thread. Iza was able to keep the secret because a man never asked a Medicine Woman what the plants were used for.

Creb had stood up for Ayla when he found out she was pregnant. After she gave birth and after she returned from running away with the baby, Creb named the baby Durc after Ayla's favorite legend.

During the Bear Festival, Ayla had stepped in front of a man that had become wounded by the bear. She stepped in front of him and Gorn had attacked the bear to prevent him from going after Ayla. Gorn died when the bear mauled him.

Zoug was the teacher of the sling. The day that Ayla started teaching herself to hunt, Zoug was teaching Vorn how to use the sling. Broud became furious at the old teacher when he saw little Vorn starting to idolize Zoug. Broud pushed Zoug and he landed on his rump in the middle of the field. Unbeknownst to Broud, Ayla was a witness to his most embarrasing moment.

Creb told the men during the ceremony that at one time women were allowed to hunt, but when they became the Clan of the Cave Bear the women had given up their right to hunt and were willing to stay home and watch the cave, raise the children and forage for food.
