Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character is described as, "Scrawny, like most wizards, and clad in a dark red robe on which a few mystic sigils were embroidered in tarnished sequins... He avoided work as a rule, but had a quickness of wit that put his acquaintances in mind of a bright rodent"?

Answer: Rincewind

Rincewind happens to be the character with the primary viewpoint in "The Colour of Magic". His unfortunate circumstance (failed wizard) arose from taking a dare while attending the Unseen University. Rincewind took a dare to look into the Octavo - a grimoire of incredible power - and a spell leaped off the page and settled into his memory.

With that spell in his head, Rincewind became unable to do any other magic, until that spell is spoken. Unfortunately for Rincewind, he doesn't actually remember the spell, as it is too dangerously powerful.
2. "There was no mistaking that shape... The wide chest, the neck like a tree trunk, the surprisingly small head under its wild thatch of black hair looking like a tomato on a coffin." Whose description is this?

Answer: Hrun the Barbarian

Hrun the Barbarian is a hero from the land of Chimeria, a direct parodying reference to Robert E. Howard's character Conan the Barbarian, from the land of Cimmeria. In "The Colour of Magic", Hrun follows the sapient pearwood luggage (and its wealth of gold within), with the intent of taking it for himself.

He finally catches up to our two main characters at the Temple of Bel-Shamharoth, from which point he agrees to accompany them onward. He ends up staying with them as far as Wyrmberg.
3. "...where his eye sockets should have been, there were nothing but two areas of blank skin. His eyes, of which he had an impressively large number, led a semi-independent life of their own. Several were currently hovering above the table." Which of the Discworld's gods is this?

Answer: Blind Io

Blind Io is the chief god of all the Discworld gods. The ranking system among the gods is based on the number of believers that a given god has, and Blind Io has managed to amass the most believers by maintaining a monopoly on thunder. While different countries may (for instance) believe in different rain gods, Blind Io has managed to be the only thunder god in every country.
4. Which character, who speaks in ALL CAPS, encounters the protagonist multiple times? "No-one else went around with empty eye sockets and, of course, the scythe over one shoulder was another clue."

Answer: Death

In the Discworld, wizards can only be claimed by Death himself, so must wait on him if they receive a mortal wound. In the case of our main character, Death seems keen on collecting his soul, and waits with anticipation for Rincewind to die on multiple occasions during the story. The only reason it does not actually happen is because of the manipulations (the game being played) by the Discworld gods.

At one point, while Death is busy attending to an outbreak of the White Plague in Pseudopolis, a stand-in (Scrofula) for the grim reaper attempts to make a name for himself by collecting Rincewind's soul, which of course cannot happen (see my first sentence above).
5. "The girl was green - flesh green. [He] could be absolutely certain about that, because all she was wearing was a medallion around her neck. Her long hair had a faintly mossy look about it. Her eyes had no pupils and were a luminous green." Which creature of the forest is this?

Answer: Druellae

While trying to escape various deadly situations (mad bears, swarming bees, and a pack of wolves) Rincewind climbs Druellae's tree. Druellae is, of course, a dryad - essentially the spirit of the tree itself. When Rincewind's weight causes a branch to break, he finds himself drawn into the tree, which turns out to be bigger on the inside.

He discovers that the damage he caused to the tree is also reflected in a wound on Druellae herself, to his chagrin.
6. Which of the Wyrmbidders (dragonlords) is first described as "almost naked, except for a couple of mere scraps of the lightest chain mail and riding boots of iridescent dragonhide. In one boot was thrust a riding crop, unusual in that it was as long as a spear and tipped with tiny steel barbs"?

Answer: Liessa

Liessa and her two brothers Lio!rt and Liartes are vying with each other for leadership of the Wyrmberg, and the arrival of Rincewind, Twoflower and Hrun the Barbarian gives Liessa the chance to take the upper hand. She promises to marry Hrun and to rule jointly with him if he will defeat her brothers in a duel.

The father of the three siblings, Greicha, was poisoned by Liessa, but he remains the undead ruler of the Wyrmberg, refusing to depart with Death, until one of his children proves themselves strong enough to take his power.
7. Who, after being shunted to an alternate universe while unconscious, was suddenly dressed in "strange clothes. His britches now ended just above his knees. Above that he wore some sort of vest of brightly striped material. On his head was a ridiculous little straw hat. With a feather in it."?

Answer: Jack Zweiblumen (Twoflower)

After Twoflower's dragon (created by his belief) disappears along with his consciousness, Rincewind and Twoflower somehow avoid plummeting to their death by their sudden and inexplicable appearance as two alternate versions of themselves in an airplane above Roundworld (Earth).

Their visit to this strange world does not last long, as the arrival of Twoflower's luggage yanks them back into their own reality.
8. Which talented but unfortunate character is seen "naked, at least, were it not for a toolbelt, a wrist abacus and a deep tan..."?

Answer: Goldeneyes Silverhand Dactylos

Dactylos is famed as being the greatest craftsman of the Discworld. Unfortunately for him, that is. After making the Metal Warriors that guard the Tomb of Pitchiu, he was given much gold, and then his eyes were put out so that he would never create anything else as beautiful (the sockets were then covered with golden discs). After designing the Light Dams he was awarded much silver, then had his hand cut off so that he couldn't construct anything else so magnificent. He replaced his hand with a silver one. After building the Palace of the Seven Deserts, he was hamstrung (after receiving amazing amounts of silk in payment.

This time, however, the Arch-Astronomer has him killed after he completes the Potent Voyager - a craft designed to carry someone over the edge of the Discworld to answer the great question - what is the sex of Great A'Tuin, the giant turtle carrying the Discworld through the cosmos.
9. He is "a rather squat but not particularly ugly old man who would quite easily have passed for normal on any city street... [but] composed of water and very little else." Who is this troll, whose job is to monitor a section of the Circumfence?

Answer: Tethis

Tethis is actually an alien visitor to the Discworld. He originally comes from a world by the name of Bathys, where he is a meatman. Essentially, he is a water-being's version of a fisherman, roaming the plains to hunt for food. Tethis came to the Discworld after he fell off the edge of his own world, froze solid in space, then eventually thawed as he neared the sun of the Discworld.

He is a slave of the Krullian people, and must live at the edge of the disc and monitor a section of the Circumfence for debris (and anything else) that gets caught in it.
10. Which Wizard of the 5th Rank is described as "a most unusually tinted young woman. Her skin was black. Not the dark brown of Urabewe, or the polished blue-black of monsoon-haunted Klatch, but the deep black of midnight at the bottom of a cave. Her hair and eyebrows were the colour of moonlight."

Answer: Marchesa

A female wizard, Marchesa is also a hydrophobe, one who has the natural ability (through fear and hatred of water) to repel any nearby fluid. By outfitting a craft (disc-shaped, as it happens to be) of hydrophobe wizards, it is able to float above the surface of the sea without difficulty.

Despite Rincewind's apparent uselessness as a wizard, Marchesa is still suitably wary of him, given what he has managed to accomplish during the events of the novel (mostly in attempting to avoid Death). For that reason, she is armed with Ajandurah's Wand of Utter Negativity, thought of by Rincewind as "a piece of utter death", just in case Rincewind begins to recite the powerful spell trapped within his mind.

The other choice options are all names of dragons in the story.
