The Discworld rests on the backs of the elephants Berilia, Tubul, Great T'Phon and Jerakeen, who themselves stand on the back of The Great A'Tuin, a star turtle of the species Chelys Galactica. 'Chelonia' is the Roundworld name of the order to which turtles and tortoises belong and many turtle species' scientific names begin with 'Chelo-'. Thus the men trained to travel to study the star turtle are called chelonauts.

The existence of Great A'Tuin and the elephants was mere hypothesis until the astrozoologists of Krull built a gantry and pulley arrangement by which they could lower several observers in a quartz-windowed brass vessel to prove their existence.

However numerous the observations they made, they could not resolve the vital question about The Great A'Tuin: "What is its actual gender?" Thus the building of The Potent Voyager and the mission of the chelonauts.

The Lancre Suicide Thrush attempts to break open snail shells not by dropping them onto stones, but rather by dive-bombing them. The Scalbie has greasy feathers and looks like other birds do after an oil slick. Nothing eats a scalbie except other scalbies.

When Hrun the Barbarian was fighting Bel-Shamharoth, Twoflower stopped running away wanting to take a picture. When he realizes one of the tentacles has The Luggage, he hands Rincewind the picturebox before going to free it. By now Bel-Shamharoth's giant eye has risen into the room, but the salamanders used as the equivalent of flashbulbs are ripe and the picture-imp says he can't hold them any longer. ("Everyone smile, please.") They go off, blinding the demon and forcing it back into it deep chthonic planes. Rincewind doesn't technically defeat Bel-Shamharoth, he just happens to be the one holding the picture box when the salamanders flash.
