Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the prize for winning a tournament in Italy one year?

Answer: a golden lion and a velvet cap

The bear was given out in London.
2. What do 'Skeffington's gyves' do?

Answer: crush you into a ball

Penny-winks would squeeze your thumbs, 'The Boot' would crush your leg with wedges, and the infamous rack would pull you apart.
3. What did El Cid have for a pet?

Answer: A lion

A tame one, of course.
4. Which of these was not an order of knights?

Answer: The Order of the Lion

All of the aforesaid answers (except the order of the lion) were all at one time or another actual orders.
5. In Crusader times, it was said that if a knight in full armor fell off his horse, he couldn't get up quickly enough to save his life. Is this true?

Answer: No

In fact, most knights could do somersaults and vault back on to their horses in the blink of an eye in their armor!
6. What did the 'Gauntlets' do?

Answer: hung you by your wrists

7. There is a true story of a duke who executed his wife so he could get a new one. What country was he duke of?

Answer: Bavaria

He got in big trouble for that (unlike King Henry VIII, who executed TWO of his six wives and got away with it).
8. What was the name of the French poet who fell in love with the Countess of Tripoli (watch your spelling!)?

Answer: Jaufre Rudel

THe story goes that he loved her even though they had never met. He sent her tons of poems until she finally invited him over. He took one look at her and keeled over in her arms, dead from love. Unfortunately, this did not happen. He did not die in the arms of the Countess and lived on until old age.
9. What killed Geoffrey of Bouillon?

Answer: wine

At a siege (he was one of the attackers), he became very thirsty. When the defenders gave way, he was sweating heavily. Instead of drinking water, he drank wine, which brought on a fever which was the cause of his death.
10. Name the knight who, in trying to prove very brave, cut off his finger and sent it as a token to a young lady?

Answer: Ulrich von Liechtenstein

Pretty gross, isn't it? I wonder what the young lady thought of his gift?
