Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Complete the saying from the "A Song of Fire and Ice" books. Aeron Greyjoy has been spreading the message that the throne is becoming lazy. He proclaims that the king is no longer watchful, but dead in all but a literal sense. The king wishes for you to address this. You want to get your message across to Aeron in terms that he would understand, so you write that what is dead may never die. How do you end it?

Answer: But rises again harder and stronger

'What is dead may never die, but rises again harder and stronger' is a classic saying of those who worship the Drowned God. While the saying may seem odd in a literal sense, it generally speaks of those who have been drowned and resuscitated.
2. Complete the saying from the "A Song of Fire and Ice" books. Jon Snow insists that the Wall needs more men and tells wild tales of men rising from the dead. The king wishes for you to tell him he doesn't know what he's talking about. What do you write?

Answer: You know nothing, Jon Snow

Jon Snow might be a little upset, considering that the words are famously said by the wildling Ygritte, whom Jon became very close to while he was with the wildlings.
3. Complete the saying from the "A Song of Fire and Ice" books. Walder Frey has finally kicked the bucket. The new Lord Frey writes that if the king sends him a thousand golden dragons, he will send the king the head of Lord Stannis Baratheon. The king doesn't think he will keep his promise. What do you write?

Answer: Words are wind

The phrase 'words are wind' might be commonly associated with the phrase 'actions speak louder than words'.
4. Complete the saying from the "A Song of Fire and Ice" books. Rumors of a secret Targaryen have spread all over the country, and the king has decided the rumors must be addressed. He instructs you to send a raven to all of the great lords explaining that the whole thing is a sham. What do you write that it is?

Answer: A mummer's farce

'A mummer's farce' general indicates fakery or a sham. 'Mummer' is actually an archaic word meaning 'an actor in a traditional masked mime', while 'farce' means 'a comic dramatic work using buffoonery and horseplay' ("New Oxford American Dictionary"). Together they literally mean something similar to a performer's clowning, or a clown's act.
5. Complete the saying from the "A Song of Fire and Ice" books. Snowstorms have increased in the North, and even in the southern parts of Westeros temperatures are dropping. The king needs to send news of the approaching winter to all of the lords. What do you write?

Answer: Winter is coming

'Winter is coming' is the motto of House Stark, but also an important message in a world where winters can last years. The message is so important that the maesters train white ravens specifically for the task of spreading that particular saying.
6. Complete the saying from the "A Song of Fire and Ice" books. The Dothraki are making trouble in Braavos, and the Braavosi are asking the king for help. He instructs you to write a letter to the Dothraki horselords. You inform them that Braavos is full of spirits waiting to curse any horselord who makes trouble in Braavos. You need to add credence to your story, so what do you write?

Answer: It is known

The Dothraki have many omens and bad signs, and if one was ever to tell you about them, they would no doubt end it with an 'it is known'. They have many superstitions that cause them to avoid certain circumstances. It is known.
7. Complete the saying from the "A Song of Fire and Ice" books. A second son of House Lannister has been getting into trouble, and now owes House Bolton lots of money. House Bolton is outraged, and the king commands you to send a letter to the Lannister, reminding him that he must pay Bolton what he owes. What do you write?

Answer: A Lannister always pays his debts

Made famous by Tyrion Lannister, the Lannister motto is actually 'Hear Me Roar', but 'A Lannister always pays his debts' is a close second. Generally, this saying is used to reassure anyone who loans House Lannister money, but sometimes it means an ungainly end for enemies.
8. Complete the saying from the "A Song of Fire and Ice" books. Recently a young squire serving House Manderly killed a Braavosi in cold blood. The Braavosi demand that the king take action, but the king refuses to execute a squire for a crime he did not commit in Westeros. The king instructs you to write the Braavosi explaining that the whole thing was a mishap and inevitable. What do you write?

Answer: All men must die

'Valar morghulis' is perhaps Braavos' most famous saying. All men must die seems to be the theme, especially with the Faceless Men who tend to hurry up those inevitable deaths. Another Braavosi saying is 'all men must serve' or 'valar dohaeris'
9. Complete the saying from the "A Song of Fire and Ice" books. Some of the worshipers of R'hllor are getting out of hand. They are sneaking out at night and burning the keeps of great lords, all who beg the king to put an end to it. The king instructs you to deal with the matter, so you send them a letter. You warn them that any sneaking around after sunset is dangerous, adding a saying of their religion. What do you write?

Answer: The night is dark and full of terrors

It shouldn't be surprising that those who worship the Lord of Light would be afraid of the dark. Oftentimes priests or priestesses such as Melisandre will keep a fire going all night to banish the darkness. This is the cause for one of the most classic mantras of the faith - 'for the night is dark and full of terrors' - where worshipers plead the Lord of Light to save them from the darkness.
10. Complete the saying from the "A Song of Fire and Ice" books. A young squire of House Martell has gone missing. The king instructs you to send out a notice to all the surrounding regions, looking for a red-headed lad with green eyes. You write that you are looking for a young man with green eyes. You want to describe his red hair in better terms, so what do you write about it?

Answer: It has been kissed by fire

'Kissed by fire' is usually a term wildlings use to describe anyone with reddish hair. The most famous example probably being Ygritte, it's not hard to see the link between 'kissed by fire' and 'flaming red' hair.
