Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First, an easy question: what style of dress must be worn at all times by sworn brothers of the Night's Watch?

Answer: Only black clothing

The brothers of the Night's Watch must give up the heraldic sigils and colours that identify their former families as a sign of their allegiance to their new "family" at the Wall. The all-black attire gives rise to their most common nickname: "Crows".
2. The members of one of the special orders of knights mentioned throughout the books are required to wear a white cloak while on duty. Which of the following would this be?

Answer: The Kingsguard

Unlike the brothers of the Night's Watch, sworn brothers of the Kingsguard are allowed to choose other types of clothing for everyday wear and some special occasions. Jaime Lannister sometimes wears a red cloak, the colour of House Lannister, when he wants to make an impressive appearance acting on behalf of the crown in other capacities than defending the King and his close family members. Sworn brothers of the King's Landing City Guard wear gold cloaks.
3. Sansa Stark is fond of nice clothes; somewhat ironically, quite a few of her finest garments end up getting ruined. In "A Game of Thrones", who manages to stain the skirt of an ivory silk gown by throwing a blood orange at her?

Answer: Arya Stark

The ivory dress was a gift from Queen Cersei upon Sansa's betrothal to Prince Joffrey. (She changes into a "pale green damask gown".) The fight typefies the differences between the two sisters, since Arya cares neither for pretty clothes nor for the royal family.
4. In "A Clash of Kings", who is described as wearing a shadowskin cloak so large that "when he was not ahorse, the only way to wear the thing was to wrap it around himself several times, which made him look like a ball of striped fur."

Answer: Tyrion Lannister

"Shadowskin" must be the pelt of a "shadowcat", a fierce wild creature that haunts the northern parts of Westeron. The singer Marillion originally wins the cloak in a skirmish against brigands on the road to the Eyrie in "A Game of Thrones". Tyrion covets the magnificant garment at the time, and later wins it from the singer in a dice game in the Mountains of the Moon.

It's taken from him when he's imprisoned, but he demands to have it back, and the request is granted. In the second book, he continues to wear it around King's Landing.
5. In "A Clash of Kings", Theon Greyjoy returns from the north to his family home in the Iron Islands. When he first presents himself to his father, he makes an unwise fashion choice. What rule of dressing, prized by the ironmen, has he forgotten?

Answer: They only wear ornaments that have been won in battle.

The charming practice of obtaining finery from the bodies of dead opponents is known as "paying the iron price". This is thought honourable, while "paying the gold price" is not. Later, during a battle, Theon thinks of picking up some plunder, but after watching some of the other warriors doing it, he decides he doesn't really want to.
6. During a traditional wedding ceremony in Westeros, there is an exchange of garments in which the groom removes one item from the bride and exchanges it for another. What is this item?

Answer: A cloak

The "maiden's cloak", which is removed, reflects the heraldic symbols of the bride's house; the wedding cloak, for which it is exchanged, of course reflects the new husband's house sigil and colours. Either of these cloaks can become a family heirloom. Cersei Lannister has a strong sentimental attachment to the highly decorated red and gold cloak she wore at her own wedding, although both Sansa Stark and the "Queen of Thorns" (Lady Olenna of House Redwynne) note at different times that it looks rather threadbare.
7. It's easy to recognize the people of Tyrosh, which is one of the Free Cities (along with Braavos, Pentos, Myr, and others) by their fashionable attire; what should you look for?

Answer: Bright colours, including hair and beards dyed in extravagant hues

In "A Feast for Crows", a ship's captain mentions that "ironmen" (people from the Iron Islands) have recently captured a Tyroshi ship and taken it over, dyeing their beards in order to attack the port of Oldtown by stealth. (However, when a Tyroshi speaker hailed them, they were caught out, because they were unable to respond in her language.)
8. The fierce horseback warriors known as the Dothraki add a piece of personal adornment every time they win a victory. What is it?

Answer: A bell, worn in the hair

The Dothraki must cut their hair if they suffer a defeat. Daenarys Targaryen's husband Khal Drogo has never cut his hair, and she often braids it for him and replaces the bells. Eventually, Daenarys begins to collect some bells of her own; her handmaids have the task of dressing her hair and reattaching her bells.
9. In "A Clash of Kings", Daenarys Targaryen enters the city of Qarth, and observes an unusual fashion adopted by upper-class Qartheen women. Later, in order to win the good opinion of the Qartheen, she clothes herself in the same way. What is this fashion?

Answer: Gowns that leave one breast bare

Daenarys observes the Qartheen looking at her from their balconies when she arrives: "tall pale folk in linen and samite and tiger fur". While the women bare a breast, the men wear "beaded silk shirts". Later, she goes before them "in flowing green samite with one breast bared, silvered sandals on her feet, with a belt of black-and-white pearls about her waist." With one shoulder bare, the claws of her dragons tend to scratch her.
10. In "A Dance with Dragons" Daenerys wears an uncomfortable garment called a "tokar" to execute her duties as a queen of Meereen. Which of the following is most similar to a tokar?

Answer: A sari

Saris would appear to be much more practical, however; tokar-wearers are constantly tripping. The garment is described as "a clumsy thing, a long loose shapeless sheet that had to be wound around her hips and under an arm and over a shoulder, its dangling fringe carefully layered and displayed." Possibly author George R.R. Martin was thinking of the robes shown in depictions of ancient Assyrian kings, which are also fringed. Daenerys would have banned the tokar, but her councillors warned her that she must not only allow them, but wear one herself, since they were a valued element of the culture of Meereen.
