Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the opening chapter of "Diamonds Are Forever", we enter the life of a creature which lives in a hole under the lone thorn bush on a great treeless veldt in Africa. What type of creature is it?

Answer: Scorpion

The scorpion has emerged from its hole in the middle of the night for food. A man sitting beneath the bush kills the scorpion when he hears a helicopter. Diamonds stolen from a mine in Sierra Leone are exchanged for money and the men part ways.
2. During the interview with M, Bond learned the basics of diamonds and diamond smuggling. The diamond house M was the most interested in was American owned and had stores in the finest streets of London, Paris and New York. What was the name of the stores?

Answer: House of Diamonds

M knows there is a shipment of hot ice in London which is on the way to America. James Bond will be inserted into the pipeline when the intended carrier, Peter Franks, is taken into custody.
3. A disguised James Bond meets with the head of the London diamond stores, Rufus B. Saye. M learns that Rufus B. Saye is an alias for Jack Spang of the 'Spangled Gang' of America. Jack has a twin brother in Las Vegas. What is his rather odd name?

Answer: Seraffimo

The Spangs own controlling interest in House of Diamonds and The Tiara, a Las Vegas casino and are head of the Spangled Gang. M takes American gangsters very seriously, but James Bond doesn't.
4. James Bond's connection to smuggling the diamonds into America was Tiffany Case. On entering her apartment he found her sitting backwards in a chair in lingerie, staring into a mirror. What was she doing?

Answer: listening to records

Tiffany asked a few questions and accepted 'Peter Franks' into the smuggling operation. He told her his real name was James Bond and he needed to get out of England for awhile because 'somebody died'.
5. After asking several questions, what did Tiffany Case suggest using to smuggle the diamonds into America?

Answer: golf balls

Dunlop 65s, actually. After Bond left she called her connection to the mob, ABC, which was only a telephone number to a tape recorder in a deserted room somewhere in London.
6. During the flight James Bond noticed two American businessmen travelling together. One was a white haired man with an empty smile and the other was a fat man who was terrified of the flight and had 'My blood group is F' stamped on his suitcase. Who were they?

Answer: Wint and Kidd

James Bond had no idea who they were, and felt compassion for the fat man. Travelling under the names Winter and Kitteridge, they were yet another guard against Bond and Tiffany taking the stones for themselves and 'going private'.
7. After smuggling the diamonds into New York, Bond met with Michael 'Shady' Tree, who cut open the six plastic wrapped balls and dumped out the stones. How many were there?

Answer: 18

Worth around $300,000 after being cut, it was a small fortune. Bond asked for his pay of $5000. Shady Tree gave Bond $1000 which he 'owed him from the time he was in England during the war' and told him to go to Saratoga and bet it all on a horse named Shy Smile. And play him to win.
8. James Bond left his New York hotel and walked toward Times Square. He looked in the window of the House of Diamonds at some excellent diamond jewelry, which had a small engraved card nearby. What did the card say?

Answer: Diamonds are Forever

At the end of the book Bond realizes that diamonds aren't the only thing that lasts forever. Death is forever too.
9. As James Bond walked along the New York street, he suddenly felt he was being tailed. He stopped twice and couldn't detect a tail on the street behind him. Why not?

Answer: it was a front tail

He stepped into a store and was confronted by his old friend Felix Leiter whom he had last seen in bandages during the "Live and Let Die" story. Felix had lost an arm and leg in the shark attack. It turned out Leiter was now working for Pinkertons and was after the Spangled Gang because the horse Shy Smile was a ringer-the real Shy Smile was long dead and replaced by Pickapepper.
10. James Bond rode to Saratoga with Felix Leiter. What unusual kind of car did Leiter have?

Answer: Studillac

Studebaker body with a Cadillac engine. And it was clocked at 127 mph at Daytona. Even in America Bond managed to get into fast cars.
11. Felix Leiter told James Bond about the people surrounding Shy Smile as they watched him warm up early in the morning. The trainer was 'Rosy' Budd, owner 'Lame-Brain' Pizzaro. The jockey was listed as T. Bell. What was he called?

Answer: Tingaling

Leiter cornered Bell and told him he had the goods on Shy Smile and offered Bell $2000 to ride foul in the race, which he accepted.
12. James Bond was playing delivery man for Felix Leiter. He was to deliver the $2000 to Bell for riding Shy Smile foul at the Acme Mud Baths. While Bond and Bell were encased in their 'coffins' of mud, two men in hoods enter, guns in hand. The fat one paused at Bond's box and seemed to recognize him. After taunting Bell, what did he do to him?

Answer: poured steaming hot mud on his face

Bell wasn't killed, just taught a lesson. He would be in the hospital for quite some time with severe burns to his face. There was 'bloody chaos' while the attendants released people from their boxed-in mud baths and dug the mud off Bell's face.
13. While recounting the panic which followed the Acme Mud Bath scene, Bond tells Leiter of the only recognizable characteristic of the hooded fat man he could see. What was it?

Answer: he had a wart on his thumb

Felix Leiter knows who the man with the 'angry red wart' is and tells Bond the two were Wint and Kidd, torpedoes from Detroit. The wart is red because he sucks on it. "Someday he's gonna wish he'd had that wart removed," Leiter commented.
14. After Bond's 'loss' of the $1000 (he didn't place the bet) Shady Tree tells him to go to Las Vegas and stay in the Tiara where he would have a room booked. He is also told to play a certain blackjack table at a specific time. Bond knows Tiffany Case works at the Tiara for the Spangs. What is her job?

Answer: blackjack dealer

Tiffany deals Bond winning hands four times from a stacked deck.
15. James Bond was told not to gamble any more after getting his pay at the blackjack table, but decides to push the issue. What game does he play?

Answer: roulette

He gets his first sight of Seraffimo Spang when Spang angrily charges into the ring. Bond calmly plays the maximum one more time and walks away with $20,000 of Spang's money. He nearly always has great luck at gambling, unlike me.
16. After his winnings in the casino, Bond takes a cab ride with Ernie Cureo, a Pinkerton man who is helping Bond under orders from Felix Leiter. Realizing they are being followed front and rear, a car chase ensues through the city of Las Vegas. One car is wrecked, erupting in flame and Ernie is shot. They take refuge in a 'Passion Pit', where they are eventually caught by the mob. What is a passion pit?

Answer: drive-in theater

Though rare nowdays, drive-ins were quite common back in the fifties. Most people who are old enough to remember those days probably know where the term 'passion pit' came from. Firsthand possibly.
Ernie Cureo is knocked out and later tells Felix Leiter of Bond's probable whereabouts while in the hospital.
17. James Bond is taken for a ride into the desert by 'Frasso and McGonigle'. The Spangled Gang own something far out in the middle of the desert where they take their guests and spend quiet time. What is it?

Answer: a western town

Seraffimo Spang has built an entire western town called Spectreville where a ghost town once stood. He spends weekends there and has lavish parties at times.
18. The Spangs have an unusual 'toy' at their hideout in the desert which captures Bond's attention. A tribute to the old west and the mining days of Nevada, what is it?

Answer: a steam locomotive

It was actually an 1870 'Highland Light' 4-4-0 named The Cannonball with tender and a lavish Pullman car attached. Ian Fleming was apparently attached to antique trains. Besides this story, trains also play a big role in "From Russia With Love" and "The Man With The Golden Gun".
19. Spang has received a wire from his brother that Peter Franks is in custody in England. Wint and Kidd, once again in hoods, begin strapping on football boots. What does Spang tell Wint and Kidd to do to Bond?

Answer: Brooklyn stomping. Eighty per center.

James Bond is kicked and stomped by Wint and Kidd, but nothing is broken and he gives nothing away. Later, he realizes that an eighty per-center probably meant no broken bones. Tiffany Case is also present and puts on a show of not caring about James Bond being tortured.
20. Tiffany Case waits for everybody to go to sleep, then revives Bond, who has been nearly kicked and stomped to death. Together they pour gasoline around the hideout of the Spangled Gang and set fire to it. What do they attempt their escape on?

Answer: a sidecar

The gas powered sidecar chugs down the train track at thirty miles per hour. Then Bond and Tiffany hear Spang's train giving pursuit. Just as Bond asks her if there is enough gas in the tank, the engine dies and they coast to a stop.
21. James Bond and Tiffany Case are stranded at night in the middle of the desert. The railroad tracks are deserted except for an occasional spur line which runs toward abandoned mines in the mountains. With their escape vehicle out of gas and Spang's engine bearing down on them, what do Bond and Tiffany Case do?

Answer: move some old points to send Spang's engine onto a spur line

Under gunfire from Spang, Bond shoots and hits Spang just as his locomotive takes the sharp and unexpected curve toward the mountains. Some time later a huge crash and explosion are heard from the abandoned rail line. Tiffany and Bond reach the parallel highway two miles away just as Bond collapses. Felix Leiter, now in Nevada looking for Shy Smile's remains, was alerted to Bond's probable location by Ernie Cureo.

He finds them along the highway after seeing Spectreville in flames, picks them up and gets them to California quickly, then on a plane back to New York.
22. How do Tiffany Case and James Bond leave America?

Answer: aboard the Queen Elizabeth

One of the similarities to the movie. But we also see a fattish man with a suitcase which says "My blood group is F" and another square jawed blond man get on board at the last minute.
23. Tiffany Case and James Bond sit in on the Auction Pool, where guests bid on the distance the ship will travel the next day. A sweating, fattish man sitting with a younger man wins the pool and does something unexpected by taking the low field in perfect weather. Bond asks Tiffany if she has ever saw the two men before. Tiffany tells him the younger man was looking stupid and the fat man was doing something else. What was it?

Answer: sucking his thumb

This made Bond's memory start to work, but Tiffany interrupted and they went off to his room. Later he recalled what Leiter had said about Wint needing to get rid of that wart.
24. Bond was alerted to Wint and Kidd's presence on the ship. How was Bond alerted?

Answer: telegraph from M

M had intercepted a wire from Jack Spang to 'Winter' which ordered Tiffany's death for $20,000. Suddenly everything fell into place for Bond, from the 'man whose blood group was F' to the wart on the thumb. Bond broke into their room while they were torturing Tiffany and shot them both, making the deaths look like they had an argument at cards. Bond then ended up in Africa waiting for the last shipment of diamonds to take place by the same thorn bush where the book started.

The pilot, Jack Spang, alias Rufus B. Saye, alias ABC, shot the dentist and tried to take off. Bond shot his helicopter down, which crashed into the thorn bush and exploded.
25. During dinner when they were still in New York, Tiffany Case told an abbreviated version of her life story to Bond. She then uttered a phrase to explain her life story to Bond, and as he watched the inferno of Jack Spang's helicopter burn itself out, thought it a fitting description of this case. What are the last words of the book?

Answer: It reads better than it lives

As Bond thought of the diamonds in the midst of the inferno, he was reminded of the man whose blood group had been F. His dead eyes had told Bond that nothing was forever except death. But James Bond realized diamonds were forever too. Those in the inferno would survive and make their way across the world someplace, forever indestructible.
