Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many boxes did Dracula bring with him to London?

Answer: 50

"Fifty cases of common earth." This is found in chapter 17. "It gave me almost a turn to see again one of the letters which I had seen on the Count's table before I knew of his diabolical plans. Everything had been carefully thought out, and done systematically and with precision."
2. Shortly after Dracula's arrival in England, Professor Van Helsing met with a group of people to discuss how they were going to go about destroying Dracula. How many people were at this meeting - including Professor Van Helsing?

Answer: 6

Van Helsing, Lord Godalming (Arthur Holmwood), Quincey Morris, Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker and Dr. Seward. This takes up a great portion of chapter 18. Van Helsing heads up the meeting, telling the group of the great chore that is in store for them.
3. During this meeting, the Professor states that all the group has to go on is the traditions and superstitions of the people. He stated that the Count controlled many things. Which of the following did he NOT mention?

Answer: Sun

He mentined a great number of things that Dracula controlled, but it would be illogical for him to mention the sun, considering that Dracula and the sun don't get along too well.
4. Later, Van Helsing, Jonathan, Quincey and Lord Godalming go to inspect Carfax Abbey and find out how many boxes are left out of the original 50. How many are now left?

Answer: 29

21 boxes have been used so far. This would mean that Dracula hasn't too much time before he has to return to Transylvania. Also at this time, the Abbey becomes filled with rats. "A few minutes later I saw Morris step suddenly back from a corner, which he was examining. We all followed his movements with our eyes, for undoubtedly some nervousness was growing on us, and we saw a whole mass of phosphorescence, which twinkled like stars. We all instinctively drew back.

The whole place was becoming alive with rats." Dracula's pet animals.
5. Later in the chapter, Dr. Seward visits his patient Renfield, whom we met earlier. Renfield is afraid for some reason to utter a word. This word is associated with "eat"--what is it?

Answer: drink

"I don't want any souls, indeed, indeed! I don't. I couldn't use them if I had them. They would be no manner of use to me. I couldn't eat them or . . ." It was during this conversation that Seward came to the realization that Renfield had been attacked by Dracula. The fact that he could not utter the word "drink" had vital importance, considering the fact that Dracula "drinks" blood. Renfield's conscience is obviously bothered by this word.
6. Later, Renfield met with a terrible accident. He is visited by Dracula, who wants him to do as he is ordered. This is another reference to the Bible that Stoker uses. Dracula represents Satan, and Renfield represents Jesus. Satan shows Jesus all the kingdoms of the world and asks Jesus to obey him. What was it that Dracula showed Renfield when he asked for Renfield's alliegance?

Answer: Rats

Another interesting Biblical parallel. The only difference between Jesus and Renfield is that Jesus told Satan to go away; Renfield invited Dracula in. "`Rats, rats, rats! Hundreds, thousands, millions of them, and every one a life. And dogs to eat them, and cats too. All lives! All red blood, with years of life in it, and not merely buzzing flies!' I laughed at him, for I wanted to see what he could do.

Then the dogs howled, away beyond the dark trees in His house. He beckoned me to the window. I got up and looked out, and He raised his hands, and seemed to call out without using any words.

A dark mass spread over the grass, coming on like the shape of a flame of fire. And then He moved the mist to the right and left, and I could see that there were thousands of rats with their eyes blazing red, like His only smaller.

He held up his hand, and they all stopped, and I thought he seemed to be saying, `All these lives will I give you, ay, and many more and greater, through countless ages, if you will fall down and worship me!' And then a red cloud, like the color of blood, seemed to close over my eyes, and before I knew what I was doing, I found myself opening the sash and saying to Him, `Come in, Lord and Master!'" Much of this part was put directly into the original 1931 version of the film. I was very surprised at this fact--no wonder the Catholic Church wanted the movie canned.
7. While staying in London, Dracula leased several houses to use as hiding places for his boxes of earth. Which one did he lease from Mitchell, Sons & Candy?

Answer: Piccadilly

All 4 are houses that were leased by Dracula, and all were leased under different companies. We do not know who he leased West End and Bermondsey from. He has a fifth place, at Walworth, and one that has not been found by the men.
8. When Van Helsing, Harker, Dr. Seward, Lord Godalming and Quincey go out to hunt down Dracula, they set out to destroy first the boxes of earth in which he slept. What did they put in the boxes so he would be unable to sleep in them?

Answer: Sacred Wafer

"As he spoke he took from his bag a screwdriver and a wrench, and very soon the top of one of the cases was thrown open. The earth smelled musty and close, but we did not somehow seem to mind, for our attention was concentrated on the Professor. Taking from his box a piece of the Sacred Wafer he laid it reverently on the earth, and then shutting down the lid began to screw it home, we aiding him as he worked." The Sacred Wafer would keep him from going into his coffin--if he went in, the wafer would singe him when he touched it.
9. When Dracula had the confrontation with the five men at Piccadilly, he realized that they would not let up until he was defeated. He decided to flee London before it was too late. Where did he go?

Answer: Transylvania

He decided it was best that he be going home. He knew that they were on to him and it was just a matter of time before they caught up to him and destroyed him.
10. What was the name of the ship that Dracula used to leave England?

Answer: Czarina Catherine

"He was in sailing ship, since Madam Mina tell of sails being set. These not so important as to go in your list of the shipping in the Times, and so we go, by suggestion of Lord Godalming, to your Lloyd's, where are note of all ships that sail, however so small.

There we find that only one Black Sea bound ship go out with the tide. She is the Czarina Catherine, and she sail from Doolittle's Wharf for Varna, and thence to other ports and up the Danube." Here the great chase to catch up with Dracula begins--the most exciting part of the whole book.
11. The ship that Dracula is using to leave London departed on the morning of October 4. How long will it take to reach its destination port of Varna?

Answer: 3 weeks

"The Czarina Catherine left the Thames yesterday morning. It will take her at the quickest speed she has ever made at least three weeks to reach Varna." Van Helsing informs the group of what he has learned.
12. The five men and Mina began on their journey and arrived in Varna on the 15th of October. When was the ship finally reported as seen to Lord Godalming?

Answer: October 24

At this point, dates are of the utmost importance to all concerned. Lord Godalming has an arrangement with the Vice-Counsul to report to him all sightings and locations of the Czarina Catherine. "Czarina Catherine reported this morning from Dardanelles." There is another sighting 4 days later: "Czarina Catherine reported entering Galatz at one o'clock today." The ship does not dock at Varna--it is at this point that they realize that Dracula has tried to throw them off his scent. (No pun intended ;D)
13. Which river did Jonathan and Lord Godalming decide that Dracula took to get to his destination?

Answer: Sereth

The Sereth is the river that will take Dracula closest to his castle. The Pruth was also considered but was ruled out when it was discovered by Mina that the Sereth is joined at the town of Fundu by the Bistriza; that goes right to the Borgo Pass. Dracula is not about to take any chances on this.
14. On what date did the final chase after Dracula occur?

Answer: November 6

This is the most suspenseful part of the novel. "By this time the gypsies, seeing themselves covered by the Winchesters, and at the mercy of Lord Godalming and Dr. Seward, had given in and made no further resistance. The sun was almost down on the mountain tops, and the shadows of the whole group fell upon the snow. I saw the Count lying within the box upon the earth, some of which the rude falling from the cart had scattered over him.

He was deathly pale, just like a waxen image, and the red eyes glared with the horrible vindictive look which I knew so well.

As I looked, the eyes saw the sinking sun, and the look of hate in them turned to triumph. But, on the instant, came the sweep and flash of Jonathan's great knife. I shrieked as I saw it shear through the throat.

Whilst at the same moment Mr. Morris's bowie knife plunged into the heart. It was like a miracle, but before our very eyes, and almost in the drawing of a breath, the whole body crumbled into dust and passed from our sight." Dracula is now dead, as is Quincey Morris--but Quincey died nobly.

The dreadful events that took place have now come to an end. Good has once again conquered Evil.
15. From beginning to end, the story covers how much time (excluding Jonathan Harker's note at the end)?

Answer: 6 months

The story begins: "3 May, Bistritz." It ends: "6 November". It is 6 months and 3 days that the entire story took place. Thank you for playing my quiz--I hope that you have enjoyed it as much as you did part I.
Sleep well tonight,
