Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The book is written in a series of journals, diaries and letters. Who is the author of the journal which begins the novel?

Answer: Jonathan Harker

Jonathan Harker is the solicitor's clerk who travels to Transylvania. He goes there to discuss a property in England which is to be purchased by Count Dracula.
2. How does Count Dracula refer to the wolves in the forest?

Answer: children of the night

Jonathan Harker had been terrified by packs of wolves as he travelled through the forest to the Count's castle. To hear them described as 'children of the night' by his host was something that didn't make him feel any less ill at ease.
3. What is Van Helsing's first name?

Answer: Abraham

The shortened version of Abraham is Bram, that is why it is suspected that of all the characters in the book Van Helsing is the one that Bram Stoker identifies with. The actor who has portrayed Van Helsin in so many films is Peter Cushing, he is usually the nemesis of Christopher Lee who has probably played Dracula just as many times.
4. When the ship "Demeter" carrying Count Dracula beached itself at Whitby what was the first creature to leave the ship?

Answer: a dog

When the ship crashed on to the shore it was discovered to be empty apart from a dead man carrying a rosary, lashed to the tiller. As the ship was approached a large dog jumped out and disappeared into the town. Later in the book it is stated that Count Dracula left the ship in the guise of a wolf and not a dog as stated earlier.
5. Who became Count Dracula's first victim after he arrived in England?

Answer: Lucy Westenra

Lucy's mother had been so worried about her daughters habit of sleep
walking that she invited Mina to stay with them to watch over her. Shortly after the night of the shipwreck Mina woke to find Lucy missing from her bed. After searching the house to no avail she went out into the town. At last she found her sitting in the local churchyard, but she was not alone, a dark figure hovered over her. Count Dracula had chosen his first victim since landing in England.
6. Count Dracula can transform himself into what?

Answer: all of these

When he left the ship he was a wolf, then at Lucy's window he took the form of a bat. Finally he entered her bedroom as a cloud of dust.
7. Is it true that if a branch of wild roses is placed on Dracula's resting place he is unable to leave it?

Answer: yes

During a meeting of the friends Van Helsing lists all those things which are anathema to Count Dracula, among them he says "the branch of wild rose placed upon his coffin keep him that he move not from it".
8. When Count Dracula arrives in England he becomes Dr Seward's neighbour. True or False?

Answer: true

Dr Seward has an asylum next to a dilapidated large house, this is the first house that Dracula buys in England. He also purchases other homes throughout southern England which makes the hunt for him more difficult.
9. At the very end of the book one of the group of friends dies. What was his name?

Answer: Quincy P Morris

Quincy is stabbed to death during the pursuit of Count Dracula as he tries to return to his castle in Transylvania.
10. In which year was 'Dracula' first published?

Answer: 1897

Bram Stoker wrote the novel while he was the actor-manager of the Lyceum theatre in London. He continued writing until his death in 1912 but nothing matched the public acclaim of 'Dracula'.
