Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year does the novel "Dracula" take place?

Answer: 1893

In unedited editions of the novel, Jonathan Harker's first entry in his diary reads, "Wednesday, 3 May 1893. Bistritz ..."
2. When the novel was written, Transylvania was part of what country?

Answer: Hungary

Transylvania did not become part of Romania until after World War I.
3. What are the first words Dracula speaks to Harker at the castle?

Answer: "Welcome to my house!"

"You are early ..." was spoken by Dracula disguised as the coachman when he met Harker at the Borgo Pass. "You have been expected ..." is a line from the film "Nosferatu, the Vampyre."
4. Which of the following is NOT found at Dracula's castle?

Answer: Servants

Harker dined on roast chicken, read books in the library, and had a near-sexual excounter with three female vampires. And although Dracula told him of his servants, Harker came to realize he was the "only living soul within the place."
5. Harker never sees Dracula during daylight hours.

Answer: False

Dracula sneaks up on Harker while he is using a mirror to shave. Harker does not see his approach because Dracula casts no reflection. Dracula then lays a hand on Harker's shoulder and says, "Good Morning." It is obvously daylight.
6. Which of the following is not used to describe Dracula?

Answer: Black Hair

Harker describes Dracula as having white hair, a long white moustache, pointed ears, sharp teeth, and believe it or not, hairy palms.
7. In a conversation with Harker, Dracula claims to be descended from whom?

Answer: Attila and the Huns

The Tsigane (spelled Szgany in the novel) are the gypsies who inhabit Transylvania; Vlad the Impaler was the historical Dracula (Vlad Dracul). He was not, as far as is known, a vampire.
8. Dracula sets sail for England aboard the "Demeter". Which of the ship's crew kills himself, rather than face being vampirized?

Answer: The First Mate

During the entire voyage, the ship's crew is uneasy, believing there is a strange man aboard. The crew then begins to disappear, and the First Mate discovers Dracula in his box in the ship's hold. Rather than face the vampire, he jumps overboard.
9. Which of the following people is the first to die after Dracula lands in England?

Answer: Mr. Swales

Mr. Swales, the old gentleman who befriends Mina and Lucy while they are in Whitby, can be considered the first of Dracula's victims in England.
10. Dr. Van Helsing discovers that Lucy is being vampirized, and places garlic and wolfsbane in her room as protection. Who removes it?

Answer: Lucy's mother

Thinking Lucy's room is too stuffy and smelly, Mrs. Westenra (Lucy's mother) removes the "anti-vampire" goods. She has no idea that her daughter is being sucked dry.
11. After Lucy dies, a spectre is seen roaming the cemetery in which she was entombed. Small children in the same area are also receiving wounds to their necks. How do the children describe what gave them the wounds?

Answer: "The Bloofer Lady"

The "Bloofer Lady", child-speak for the "Beautiful Lady", is Lucy Westenra. She has emerged from her tomb and become one of the Undead.
12. Who drives the stake through Lucy's heart?

Answer: Lord Godalming

Arthur Holmwood, who by this time has become Lord Godalming (upon the death of his father) was engaged to Lucy, and therefore has the right to penetrate her with his stake. The novel contains many hidden sexual references.
13. Who is the first to realize that Dracula is now in England?

Answer: Jonathan Harker

Harker somehow escaped from Castle Dracula (we never find out how) and after a recovery in Buda-Pesth for what is described as "brain fever", returns to England, now married to Mina. During a stroll in Piccadilly, he sees Dracula, again during daylight.
14. What action often attributed to vampires never happens in the novel to indicate Dracula is a supernatural being?

Answer: Sleeps upside-down hanging from the rafters

Although the author never states that Dracula turns into a bat, there are numerous instances in the novel that imply that Dracula is indeed a bat flapping at Lucy's window; Harker sees Dracula crawl face-first down a wall when he is imprisoned at the castle; and during the mirror/shaving incident when Harker has cut himself, Dracula makes a frenzied grab for Harker's throat and touches a Rosary that is hung around his neck.

He is immediately subdued. Never is Dracula portrayed as sleeping upside-down hanging from the rafters in the novel, although many movies do portray this.
15. How is Mina's forehead "branded"?

Answer: By a piece of the Host

With Lucy undead, Mina becomes Dracula's next victim. He forces her to drink his blood from an open vein, and when she does, becomes "unclean". Van Helsing, trying to protect her, touches her forehead with a piece of the Host, which immediately burns and scars her.
16. Which of the following creatures is not on Mr. Renfield's "menu"?

Answer: Cockroaches

Renfield, locked away in Dr. Seward's lunatic asylum, has the curious habit of eating live spiders, flies, and birds. He wants to consume as many lives as he possibly can. He is Dracula's lackey.
17. Where is Dracula destroyed?

Answer: Transylvania

Dracula tries to escape back to Transylvania after being thwarted in London. He is chased by the vampire hunters (Van Helsing, et. al.), and they finally catch up with him at his castle.

Then the child's mother arrives at the castle and demands her baby back, and we know what is in the bag. But alas, it is too late. The child has been devoured, and the mother is subsequently is slaughtered by wolves.
22. The name of the residence that Dracula wishes to purchase in England is called what?

Answer: Carfax Abbey

Carfax Abbey was located near Purfleet.
