Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Claire is pregnant at both the beginning and end of "Dragonfly in Amber".

Answer: False

She is pregnant for neither. Though she is pregnant with Faith in the beginning of the part of "Dragonfly" set in 1744, and again with Brianna when she returns through the standing stones in 1746, both the beginning and ending of "Dragonfly" are set in 1968 when Brianna has already been born.
2. What does Master Raymond call Claire?

Answer: Madonna

Because her aura is blue, like the Virgin's cloak, like his own. Raymond was the apothecary Claire visited in Paris, who later helped her to heal after she miscarried Faith.
3. What was the name of the boy Jamie met at Madame Elise's, whom he employed as a pickpocket to spy on Prince Charles Edward Stuart?

Answer: Claudel

To avoid an assassination attempt Jamie inadvertently took refuge in Madame Elise's brothel, in the possession of a "verra large sausage" that he had purchased, weaponless, as a means of self defence. Claudel showed Jamie an alternate exit by which the two of them escaped, and later on christened him "Fergus" because the boy didn't think that Claudel was a very manly name.
4. What was the name of Silas Hawkins' niece?

Answer: Mary

Claire is perplexed to discover that Mary Hawkins has been promised to the Vicomte Marigny because she remembers the name linked with Jack Randall's on Frank's genealogical chart. As it turns out, Jack was not really Frank's direct ancestor - he married the young girl following the death of her love, Alexander Randall, his younger brother. Mary was pregnant with Alex's child at the time.
5. Jared Fraser comments that it is not in good form for the lady of the house to gossip with whom?

Answer: kitchenmaids

Claire mentions at dinner that Prince Charles Edward Stuart has been visiting La Princesse Louise de la Tour de Rohan "in the absence of the lady's husband", a fact which she had come across chatting with Jared's kitchenmaid, who heard it from the knife-boy, who heard it from... well, you get the idea.
6. What position does Monsieur Forez hold?

Answer: Hangman

Specifically, he's the public hangman for the Fifth Arrondissement. He gives Claire a salve of hanged-men's grease, and later describes to Claire and Jamie how a traitor's death is carried out - a warning at the behest of Mother Hildegarde.
7. Jamie intercepts a letter sent from England to Prince Charles Edward Stuart that is disguised as a piece of music. After it has been deciphered by Claire and Mother Hildegarde they discover that it is signed, simply, "-S". Who is S?

Answer: Sandringham

The Duke of Sandringham was also responsible for the attack on Claire and his own god-daughter, Mary Hawkins, in the Rue de Faubourg St.-Honoré. Sworn to avenge Mary's innocence, Murtagh later decapitates His Grace and gives the head to Hugh Munro's widow, for whose husband's death the Duke is also responsible.
8. Jamie's paternal grandfather, Simon Fraser the Elder, tries to include the Lallybroch men among the troops he sends to Prince Charles.

Answer: True

The Old Fox hopes that if the restoration is successful he will be able to convince Charles that Broch Tuarach (known affectionately as "Lallybroch") belongs to Clan Fraser, the evidence for this being that the men who reside there came to fight at his side.

However, Claire remarks to Jamie the discrepancy between the number of soldiers Old Simon dictated that he sent (200) and the number of men present (170) and Jamie was able to remove his men's names from Simon Fraser's lists before they met up with the rest of the Highland army.
9. With which Scottish noble's heir did Fergus have an altercation?

Answer: Kilmarnock

Fergus overheard the Kilmarnock boy insult Jamie, calling him a "bonnet laird". Biding his time, Fergus waited until the older boy was distracted by a particularly daring display of swordsmanship by Jamie ("le parabola"), and took the opportunity to clunk him with a stick on the back of the head.
10. Which of these is not an herb Jamie administered to fake smallpox aboard the "Scalamandre"?

Answer: Cascara

Rose madder to simulate blood in his urine, rosemary for a flushed appearance, and nettle juice for red welts. Cascara was suggested as a source of diarrhoea, but was not among the herbs that Claire finally gave to Murtagh. (Murtagh was initially supposed to play the pox victim and Jamie the wealthy merchant who was perchance aboard, but they switched roles due to Jamie's relentless sea-sickness.)
11. Jamie and Claire first encounter John William Grey (addressed as William in "Dragonfly") before which battle?

Answer: Prestonpans

Hoping to impress both his elder brother, Lord Melton, and his "special friend", Hector, Grey attempts to capture Red Jamie Fraser on his own. He is no match for the Highlander, though, and is himself captured. Hoping to preserve the honour of the Englishwoman (Claire) he found being kept prisoner by the Scots, Grey gives Jamie information regarding his brother's troops and their movement to join up with General Cope.
12. What does Master Raymond give to Claire to protect her from poisons?

Answer: A crystal

He gave her a small crystal that would change colour in the presence of several harmful substances. Jamie had it set into a necklace that Claire could wear around her neck. The idea was for her to fiddle with the necklace at a soirée they were holding until someone asked her about it, and then to watch the expression on St. Germaine's face when she told their guests what it was for. Unfortunately the dinner was most scandalously interrupted before Claire could "catch the conscience" of the compte... ("Hamlet"; II.ii.610)
13. How was Jack Randall able to sire Frank's many-times-great-grandfather, despite the injury he sustained in his duel with Jamie?

Answer: He didn't.

Mary was in love with Jack's younger brother, Alex. Alex, however, died in Edinburgh of congestive heart failure (and consumption... tuberculosis). His last act (as a curate) was to marry his brother Jack to Mary Hawkins, who was pregnant with his, Alex's, child.
14. When she returns to her own time, does Claire tell Frank about Jamie?

Answer: Yes

Whether or not he believed her story is another matter entirely. It didn't seem to matter to him, though, because he loved Brianna from the moment she was born.
15. This sequel to "Outlander" is so-titled because Jamie and Claire celebrate their first wedding anniversary in the course of the novel. Where was Jamie at this time?

Answer: In the Bastille.

He had been imprisoned by the King's Guards for duelling with Jack Randall in the Bois de Boulogne, just before Claire miscarried their first child, baptized Faith by Mother Hildegarde. This was a cause for consternation, as Jamie was to be making his way south to Orvieto, Spain, there to meet up with Murtagh aboard the "Scalamandre" and intercept His Royal Highness' shipment of port bound for Le Havre.
