1. The chieftain's call is what?

Answer: the fiery cross

It is revealed in one chapter (also called "The Fiery Cross", same as the novel's title) that the fiery cross was what lairds and chieftains among the Highland Scots used to call their clansmen to battle. The wood cross was set alight, then doused with either blood or water, and the resulting charred cross (though still referred to as being fiery) was taken through the countryside.

2. What had Mrs. Bug cleaned that upset Claire?

Answer: All of these

They were her experiments in growing penicillin, but Mrs. Bug thought the Chisholm children had left them whilst playing in Claire's surgery.

Frank was an historian, and since we know he found Jamie (discovered in "Drums of Autumn") they think it likely that he would have found Brianna in his history books as well.
