Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What does Claire call Phillip Wylie that particularly enrages him?

Answer: "puppy"

She first calls him this when he made advances on her in the stables. It didn't help any that Dr. Fentiman calls him so after Betty's death.
2. What is the name of the slave who was murdered?

Answer: Betty

She is first drugged with laudanum (which is suspected to have been by accident, the drug meaning to be for Duncan). The perpetrator then killed her by slipping ground glass into her food or drink so she wouldn't be able to tell anyone who gave her the drugged punch.
3. Whose appearance at the party is Brianna shocked to hear about?

Answer: Stephen Bonnet

Stephen Bonnet is the OTHER man who might be her son Jemmy's father.
4. What is the correct response to this toast (as per Part V): "To beauty"?

Answer: To privacy

This toast is given on the stone bench in the garden first by Jamie and Claire, and later by Roger and Brianna. It was a sweet coincidence. :)
5. There is a statue in the Innes' garden that a number of young ladies can't help but exclaim over. It is of which Greek hero?

Answer: Perseus

What Claire thought was just a slab of rock at the statue's feet was actually Medusa's head.
6. Which of these English phrases was among the only in Father LeClerc's vocabulary?

Answer: "Tally-ho!"

He said it both in greeting and in parting.
7. When Brianna asks Jocasta if she is pleased to be marrying Duncan, Jocasta says "aye" and remarks that it will be the first time she's changed her name in how many years?

Answer: Fifty

Born Jocasta MacKenzie, she was married at the age of sixteen to John Cameron, then to Hugh Cameron, then to Hector Cameron, and now finally to Duncan Innes.
8. Where does Jocasta and Duncan's wedding ceremony take place?

Answer: In Jocasta's sitting room

They had the ceremony inside so as not to offend their Protestant guests (Jocasta is a Catholic, but Duncan is a Presbyterian although nobody else but Roger knows it).
9. Which of these is not one of Jocasta's daughters?

Answer: Rós

Clementina was John's, Seonag was Hugh's, and Morna was Hector's. Hector accidentally shot and killed Morna while trying to escape with his wife with the Frenchman's gold, and her other two daughters are suspected to have died in the famine after Culloden.
10. It is revealed by Jocasta in the part that Louis of France did in fact send gold to his cousin, Charles Stuart, the Young Pretender to the Throne. In what month of 1745 did the gold arrive in Scotland?

Answer: March

It arrived the month before the slaughter at Culloden, but by then the Young Pretender's army was already retreating, and it was just too late to do anything with it to save the Highlanders.
