Jamie knew Gavin from his time in jail; Gavin, like the rest of the inmates, was sent to America while Jamie was sent to Helwater.

While on the "Sally Ann" they are hijacked by river pirates captained by Stephen Bonnet, the man who Jamie had saved from hanging, and he steals the gems and one of Claire's wedding rings. Ungrateful sod!
