Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the Elvish name for Gandalf?

Answer: Mithrandir

In Quenya it is "Olórin". Legolas calls Gandalf "Mithrandir" when the wizard returns in "The Two Towers," and the men of Gondor use the Sindarin name as well.
2. Translate into the Common Speech: "Aníron Undómiel".

Answer: I desire Evenstar

Taken from the movie soundtrack. I don't think I have to tell you that "Undómiel" means "Evenstar" and is one of Arwen's names :)
3. What does "Caradhras" mean in the Common Speech?

Answer: Redhorn

Originally "caran-rass".
4. Bilbo calls Aragorn "the Dúnadan". What does it mean?

Answer: Man of the West

Síndarín, originally "dún-adan". The plural is "Dúnedain".
5. Translate "friend" into Elvish.

Answer: mellon

You knew that, didn't you?
6. Translate into the Common Speech: "Mornië utúlie".

Answer: Darkness has come

From "May It Be" by Enya. 'Mornië' is Quenya for 'darkness', whereas 'môr' (shortened to 'mor' in compounds) is Sindarin for 'darkness.
7. What does Glorfindel (Arwen in the movie) say to his (her) horse Asfaloth?

Answer: noro lim

"Noro lim, Asfaloth!" - "Ride on, Asfaloth!".
8. Translate "Namárië" into the Common Speech.

Answer: Farewell

"Namárië! Nai hiruvalyë Valimar." - "Farewell! Maybe thou shalt find Valimar." From Galadriel's song in the book. It sounds like Quenya to me, not Sindarin, but I seem to remember that the use of the word "Namárië" is universal, regardless of the different languages.
9. Here's a rather tricky one: What does "Yrch" mean?

Answer: Orcs

Legolas exclaims this once in the book.
10. Which of the following Elvish words does NOT mean "star"?

Answer: celeb

"Celeb" means "silver". "Êl" is Quenya, "elen" is Síndarín... and I didn't find out what "gil" is. It just says in the appendix that "gil" means "star".
Thanks for playing... namárië! :)
