Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Eru Ilúvatar created the world, he only spoke 'Eä!'. What does 'Eä!' mean though?

Answer: Let it be

Eä, the universe in Tolkien's world, is known as 'The World that Is'. The physical world of Arda, which contains Middle-earth and Valinor, is within Eä. The strongest Ainur who came to shape Arda and stop Melkor from taking it for himself, became known as the Valar.
2. Morgoth, the Great Enemy, was originally named Melkor. What do these two names mean?

Answer: 'The Black Foe' - 'Mighty-rising'

He was named Morgoth by Fëanor when he stole the Silmarils. Another one of his names was Bauglir (Oppressor, Constrainer), sometimes coupled with 'Morgoth' to make a full title (Morgoth Bauglir). He was also referred to as the Dark Lord.
3. Fëanor, creator of the Silmarils and greatest of the Noldor, was quite temperamental. What does his rather fitting name mean?

Answer: Spirit of Fire

The name given to Fëanor by his mother was Fëanáro, and is the Quenya version of his name. The name given by his father was Curufinwë, which means 'Skillful Finwë'.
True to the meaning of his name, when Fëanor died his spirit burned his body to ashes, leaving nothing behind. This death was unique, even in the vast world of Tolkien.
4. This maiden, whose name in Sindarin means 'Daughter of Flowers', was said to be the fairest who ever lived. Who is she?

Answer: Lúthien

Lúthien was also called Tinúviel, which means 'Daughter of Twilight'. She was the Princess of Doriath, daughter of Thingol and Melian. She fell in love with a mortal, Beren, and helped him recover one of the stolen Silmarils from Morgoth's crown.
The story of Aragorn and Arwen bears many similarities to that of Beren and Lúthien. Arwen's beauty was also often compared to that of Lúthien.
5. Saruman had many names, most of which mean 'Man of Skill'. Which name is in Sindarin?

Answer: Curunír

Curumo is in Quenya, while Saruman is the name of Men for him. Mithrandir is one of Gandalf's names and it means 'Grey Traveller'.
Saruman was originally known as Curumo, while he was still a Maia (lesser Ainu) living in Valinor. He came to Middle-earth as a Wizard with Gandalf and three other Maiar, on orders from the Valar.
6. Upon his return in the Middle-Earth in the Third Age, Sauron established Dol Guldur as his stronghold. What does Dol Guldur mean?

Answer: Hill of Sorcery

Dol Guldur was established around the year 1000 of the Third Age. Sauron remained there under the secret identity of the Necromancer until the year 2043, when Gandalf went there to find out more about the Necromancer's identity. Sauron returned to Dol Guldur in 2460, only to flee again to Mordor in 2941, when Dol Guldur was attacked by the White Council.

It was retaken by three of the Nazgûl only 10 years later.
7. Orthanc, the Tower of Isengard, has a meaning both in the language of Rohan and in Sindarin. What is its meaning in Sindarin?

Answer: Mount Fang

Orthanc was the Tower of Isengard and the place where Saruman lived. It was built by the Dúnedain during the Second Age and was extremely durable, as not even the Ents could damage it when they attacked Isengard.
Its meaning was 'Cunning Mind' in the language of the Rohirrim (which is based on Old English). Tolkien said that this double meaning was accidental.
8. Treebeard's name is an exact translation of his Sindarin name, Fangorn.

Answer: True

Treebeard was the oldest of the Ents. He lived in Fangorn forest with the other Ents, cut off from the world. He became friends with Merry and Pippin after they had escaped from their Orc captors at the beginning of 'The Two Towers', even though at first he thought they were little Orcs!
9. During his childhood, Aragorn grew up in Rivendell, while his true identity was kept from him. What was the name given to him, which means 'Hope' in Sindarin?

Answer: Estel

Elessar means 'Elfstone' in Quenya. Aragorn took this name after Galadriel gave him the Elfstone. Dúnadan means 'Man of the West' in Sindarin, and it was a name given to Aragorn by Bilbo. Telcontar is the Quenya translation of Aragorn's nickname, 'Strider'.

He chose it as the name of his royal house after he was crowned. Another name that Aragorn used was Thorongil ('Eagle of the Star' in Sindarin), while serving for some time in his youth under King Thengel of Rohan and Steward Ecthelion of Gondor.
10. "Ash nazg durbatulûk, ash nazg gimbatul, ash nazg thrakatulûk, agh burzum-ishi krimpatul." Upon which artifact was this inscription written?

Answer: The One Ring

"One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them, One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them."
Written in the Black Speech, Sauron's language for his servants, this inscription was written upon the One Ring and would appear only when it was heated.
