Grendel, a monster of human shape and superhuman size, had terrorized the Danish kingdom of King Hrothgar for twelve years.

An elderly Beowulf and his loyal companion Wiglaf slayed the dragon, but Beowulf received mortal wounds and died shortly afterwards.
