Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The visit from King George V to Ty Gwyn is a resounding success until a disastrous event occurs. What happens?

Answer: There's an explosion in the coalmine

Ethel has been working at Ty Gwyn for seven years when she's asked to fill in for the housekeeper who is taken ill. This comes at an awkward time as they are preparing for a visit from King George V. Ethel does a terrific job and Fitz is really impressed with her.

He had been fearful that Maud might upset the king, but she avoids the subject of women's suffrage. Just as everything seems to be going perfectly, they feel a tremor in the ground. An explosion in the coalmine has cost the lives of eight miners.

The day after the accident the king visits Aberowen to pay his respects to the bereaved families. This all happens in January 1914, a couple of months before the murder of Franz Ferdinand and the start of the first world war.
2. Grigori has been saving for years to buy his ticket to sail to America. At the very last moment he gives his ticket to his brother Lev. Why?

Answer: Because Lev is wanted for murder

The night before Grigori is leaving for America, Lev shoots someone during an argument involving stolen cigarettes. He meets Grigori by the docks and asks him for his ticket and passport so he can flee to America. Grigori has looked after his no-good brother all his life and, reluctantly, hands over the ticket. On his way back home, Grigori meets Katerina, who tells him she's pregnant with Lev's child. Grigori promises to take care of her and the baby although he knows she's still in love with Lev.
3. Lev thinks the ship will take him to New York but he ends up in a completely different place. Where?

Answer: Cardiff

Shortly after disembarking Lev finds out he's not in New York but in Cardiff. It seems that the Vyalov family, who has sold the ticket to Grigori, has ripped him off. After a while Lev is offered a job as a strikebreaker in the Aberowen coalmines. Lev eventually earns enough money to continue his journey to the USA by cheating in high stakes card games.
4. After Ethel tells Fitz she's pregnant with his child he asks her to leave his service and offers her an annual income of £24 a year. Does Ethel accept this offer?

Answer: No

No, she makes him a counteroffer instead. She wants Fitz to buy her a house in a working-class neighborhood in London, big enough to take in a lodger. This will cost Fitz about £300, probably less than paying Ethel £24 a year for the rest of her life. Fitz accepts Ethel's offer.
5. Who are the witnesses at Walter and Maud's wedding?

Answer: Robert and Ethel

Walter and Maud get married in secret. Walter's father, Otto, is against the wedding because of the war, both because he feels it will jeopardize his and Walter's career and because he thinks Maud is too liberal. Fitz is even unaware that Maud is in love with Walter. Maud hasn't told him anything because she fears he might try to prevent the wedding, as he would be against it because of the war between England and Germany. Robert and Ethel are the only people who know about the wedding.
6. Who is seriously injured on the first day of the Battle of the Somme?

Answer: Fitz

Fitz is shot in the leg and in the cheek. This leaves him with a permanent limp and one eye half closed. Billy and Tommy survive the Battle of the Somme. Their platoon even manages to take a German trench, but they have to retreat because of lack of ammunition.
7. In March 1917 Grigori, now a sergeant in the Russian army, is ordered to defend the Liteiny Bridge against protesters trying to get into Saint Petersburg. Does Grigori shoot at the protesters?

Answer: No, he shoots at the police instead

Grigori is sympathetic with the cause of the protesters. Furthermore, the situation reminds him of the 1905 riots, when his mother was shot. He has no intention of obeying the orders. However, the police, led by Grigori's enemy Mikhail Pinsky, do shoot at the protesters when they are trying to get into the city. Grigori shoots at Pinsky, and the rest of the platoon also side with the protesters. Grigori's platoon and the protesters manage to drive away the police. Grigori takes a red flag and leads the protesters to the army barracks to arm them.

The Russian revolution has begun.
8. Who does Walter accompany on his train ride through Germany in 1917?

Answer: Vladimir Lenin

The USA join WWI in April 1917. The Germans are still fighting a two front war, and with the Americans coming, desperately need to make peace on the Eastern Front. Despite the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II the Russians are still fighting on. Lenin and a group of revolutionaries living in exile in Switzerland are trying to get back to Russia.

The Germans support them and allow them to pass freely through Germany, hoping that they will overthrow the Russian Provisional Government and end the war on the Eastern Front. Walter is accompanying Lenin and the other revolutionaries from Switzerland to Sweden.

He also gives Lenin a sum of money to support his revolution. The German plan works: in November 1917 (October according to the Russian calendar) Lenin and his Bolsheviks grab power.

This eventually leads to the Brest-Litovsk peace treaty.
9. Does Lev keep his promise to provide Grigori with the money to emigrate to the USA?

Answer: Yes, but Grigori refuses because he wants to stay in Russia

Almost five years after Lev fled Russia, the two brothers finally meet again. Grigori is now a commissar in the Red Army, Lev a conscript in the American military assigned as an interpreter in a covert operation supporting the Whites against the Reds in the Russian Civil War.

When Lev is taken prisoner he is brought to Grigori. They talk a while about what has happened with their lives during the last five years. Then Lev says he has enough money (earned in a dubious manner as usual) to help Grigori and his family to emigrate to the USA.

Much to Lev's surprise Grigori refuses. He explains that Russia isn't the same anymore, there are no more Tsars, he now lives in the Kremlin and he wants to continue working for Russia's new government. Lev suspects that Grigori doesn't want to come to the USA because he is afraid Katerina would leave him for Lev if she had the chance. Eventually Grigori helps Lev to escape back to the White Army while he remains in Russia.
10. Who is elected MP for Aldgate in the 1923 General Election?

Answer: Ethel

It has been Bernie's lifelong dream to be a labour MP. He was the Labour candidate for Aldgate for the 1918 General Election, but lost to the liberal candidate who supported Lloyd George's coalition. After his defeat, Bernie realized that he was not suited for the job.

He is a thinker and a planner, not a leader who can inspire a crowd. He says Ethel should be the Labour candidate next time. And she is. Ethel wins the 1923 General Election by a landslide and becomes a Labour MP for Aldgate. Her brother Billy also becomes MP, for Aberowen.
