Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Magician's Nephew", by C.S. Lewis, there are five major characters. You know Aslan was the lion, but who was the powerful villain?

Answer: Jadis

Queen Jadis of Charn was the villain Polly and Diggory found sleeping in a great hall with all her court. Diggory woke her by striking a bell, and after that she proved very difficult to get rid of. In the end, she fled to a garden where she hung about plotting against the Narnians. Some scholars think she is the same character as the White Witch in "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", others point to a comment about "all these northern witches..." which implies she is not.

Polly and Diggory are the child protagonists of the story, while Andrew is Diggory's foolish and rather wicked uncle.
2. In the venerable television series "Dr Who", the first doctor and his granddaughter, Susan, were accompanied on their travels by two teachers named Ian and Barbara. What did Ian teach?

Answer: Science

Ian Chesterton, he of the cardigan and tie, was Susan's science teacher. Barbara taught history. Ian was portrayed by William Russell.
3. In the "Dr Who" movie starring Paul McGann, the Doctor had something rather unlikely attached to his toe. What was it?

Answer: A tag. He was in the morgue.

The eighth Doctor had a tag on his toe. His seventh body (Sylvester McCoy) had died, and when he regenerated as Paul McGann, he had been tagged and shrouded. He caused some uproar as he came back to life.
4. In Piers Anthony's "Magic of Xanth" series, there are four related women. Three of them are, at some point, King of Xanth. Which is the eldest?

Answer: Iris

The Sorceress Iris is married to King Trent and takes over the kingship during an emergency. Her daughter Irene, married to Dor, is also King for a brief while, as is Irene's daughter, Ivy, who is married to Magician Gray. Ida is Ivy's twin sister, lost before birth when the stork made a mis-delivery, and recovered later. She is an ideas person, but she wasn't King.
5. In "Dark Lord of Derkholm", by Diana Wynne Jones, there is something odd about Derk's daughter, Elda. What is it?

Answer: She is a griffin with human genes.

Elda is a griffin with human genes, one of several unusual children Derk creates. Two of the children are wholly human, but they have interesting talents. Apart from Elda and her siblings, Derk created talking geese and a flying foal. In "The Year of the Griffin", Elda goes to university.
6. In Margaret Ball's fun novel "Mathemagics", heroine Reva Konneva spends time on Earth. She refers to it by which name?

Answer: The Planet of the Paper-Pushers

Reva refers to Earth as The Planet of the Paper-Pushers because there seems to be too much paper-pushing going on. Reva prefers to deal with things directly - by clouting them with her sword.
7. In the television series "Nowhere Man", starring Bruce Greenwood, hero Thomas Veil had had his life stolen. Who was responsible for his loss?

Answer: He was.

In a nasty twist at the end, Thomas discovered that he was somehow behind his whole problem. The same kind of twist was used in "Total Recall" and in "The Prisoner". An oldie, but a goodie.

Clued-up viewers might have suspected from Tom's name. "Thomas" means "a twin" and "Veil" means "hidden".
8. In Norman Lindsay's classic fantasy "The Magic Pudding", who or what is Bunyip Bluegum?

Answer: A koala

Bunyip Bluegum is the hero of the story, a mild-mannered koala. The Puddin' is anything but mild mannered, especially when the puddin' theives are after him.
9. In Margaret Mahy's book "The Haunting", who is the latest Scholar Magician?

Answer: Troy

At the end of the story, Barney's sister Troy turns out to be the latest Scholar Magician. Everyone had expected Barney to inherit the mantle from his deceased relative, also called Barnaby. Dove was Troy's dead mother, and Tycho is from "The Catalogue of the Universe", another Mahy novel.
10. In Tamora Pierce's "Song of the Lioness" sequence, why does Alanna disguise herself as a boy?

Answer: She wants to be a knight

Alanna wants to be a knight, but is meant to learn magic instead. Her brother, Thom, would rather learn magic than knightly doings, so they swap.
11. In Diana Wynne Jones' book "Howl's Moving Castle", where was Wizard Howl born?

Answer: In Wales

Wizard Howl, aka Howell Jenkins, was born in Wales. He preferred the life of a wizard in Ingary, and married Sophie, a hatter's daughter, there. In "Castle in the Air", a sequel to "Howl's Moving Castle", Sophie spent some time as a cat.
12. In Robin McKinley's book "Beauty", the three sisters are known as Grace, Hope and Beauty. What is Beauty's real name?

Answer: Honour

Beauty's real name was Honour, but the concept was a bit difficult for her as a child, so she preferred Beauty. Jeweltongue and Lionheart were the names of the elder sisters in McKinley's other version of the same story; "Rose Daughter".
13. In Pamela Dean's book "Tam Lin", who is the father of Janet's coming baby?

Answer: Thomas Lane

Thomas Lane was the father of Janet's baby. The pregnancy was unplanned (by Janet, at least), and there was some magic skullduggery involved, but there was a strong argument for keeping the child.

Nick Tooley was Janet's first boyfriend, while the other two characters are from Diana Wynne Jones' own "Tam Lin" story - "Fire and Hemlock".
14. In Paul Gallico's book "The Man Who Was Magic", Adam was a real magician.

Answer: True

Adam was a young man who arrived to take part in a contest for magicians. All the others were stage magicians, and they were very upset when he scrambled an egg and then unscrambled it.
15. In E. Nesbit's book "The Phoenix and the Carpet", who becomes queen of a remote island?

Answer: Cook

Cook is accidentally carried off to a south sea island when she steps on the magic carpet. She loves the island, and the inhabitants decide to make her their queen. There she reigns happily, especially when the reformed burglar becomes her consort.
