Anne McCaffrey has written a spell-binding series about dragons and people which are inspiring. I've always loved her books but the Dragons of Pern always caught me up in the thrill of the dream.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Manora is F'lar's mother. Is this true or false?

Answer: False

Manora is F'nor's mother. F'lar and F'nor are half-brothers and had the same father. Both lads were raised by Manora as fostering is a common practice on Pern. Reference "Dragonflight" by Anne McCaffrey.
2. What type of rock do dragons need to chew to be able to flame?

Answer: Firestone

Firestone is a phosphine-bearing rock which mixes with the internal acids of a dragon's or fire-lizard's second stomach to produce flame. The back teeth are used to masticate the stone. After a fall they regurgitate a mass of wet sand-like residue. Reference "Dragonsdawn" by Anne McCaffrey.
3. Klah is a native tree which was brought from Earth to Pern. Is that true or false?

Answer: False

Klah is a native tree to Pern of which the bark is ground and brewed. The preferred method of drinking it is warm, and some people like it with sweetening added to it. Reference "Dragonlover's Guide to Pern" by Jody Lynn Nye & Anne McCaffrey and "Chronicles of Pern: First Fall" by Anne McCaffrey.
4. Is Sebell Master Robinton's son?

Answer: No

In the book "Master Harper of Pern" we learn that Master Robinton's only son is Camo who they believe suffered oxygen deprivation during birth which affected his mental abilities.

Sebell is the apprentice Master Robinton took on and trained to be his replacement. When Master Robinton was forced to step down due to health issues, Sebell was nominated by the other Masters to take the post of Master Harper of Pern. Harpers not only play music and sing but also teach children. Eventually all learning fell under the aegis of Masters in the craft. There are a variety of schools of education such as smith-craft, healers, animal husbandry, farming and glass-making to name a few.
5. Menolly is the daughter of Yanus of Half Circle Sea Hold. What was she beaten for doing in "Dragon Song"?

Answer: Singing / playing music she had written in front of the hold children

Few women in modern day Pern became musicians or songwriters and a woman's place was in the hold rather than twittering about with musical instruments. It was considered improper to have a girl teaching the hold children.
6. How many years did it take the original expedition to make it to Pern?

Answer: Fifteen

It took fifteen earth years to reach Pern from Earth. Most of the colonists spent the journey in deep sleep while others rotated in five year stints. Most of the livestock was also in deep sleep along with 25 dolphins. Reference "Dragonsdawn" by Anne McCaffrey.
7. What was the name of Sean Connell's dragon?

Answer: Carenath

Sean Connell and Sorka Hanrahan impressed the last two of Kit Ping Yung's dragons. Sorka could hear all dragons, an ability that would later prove beneficial to the weyr. Sean became the leader of the dragon riders and together the group worked hard to prepare for Thread. Thread is a mycorrhizoid spore which comes from outer space, dragged by the Red Star, and devours all carbon-based lifeforms. Reference "Chronicles of Pern: First Fall" by Anne McCaffrey.
8. What was the first hold established in the north called?

Answer: Fort Hold

Fort Hold was the first secure hold established when the colonists moved to the north. It housed all the people and animals until secondary bases could be established. In the early years, plague ravaged through the colonists and caused much information to be lost through the death of specific individuals. Reference "Dragonsdawn" by Anne McCaffrey.
9. What weyr protects Keroon Hold?

Answer: Igen

There are a total of eight weyrs and one weyrhold. Six are located in the north while the other three are located in the south. They are: Fort Weyr, Benden Weyr, High Reaches Weyr, Igen Weyr, Ista Weyr, Telgar Weyr, Southern Weyr, Monaco Bay Weyr, and Honshu Weyrhold. A weyr is the name given to the stone caves built for dragons and their riders. It can also be used to describe a single living accommodation for a rider and his dragon or the entire weyr such as Benden Weyr. Reference, "All the Dragonriders of Pern" by Anne McCaffrey.
10. Who was the weyrleader of Benden Weyr before F'lar assumed leadership?

Answer: R'gul

R'gul's non-interference policy almost brought Benden Weyr to its knees. Luckily for Benden, F'lar had just become Weyrleader after his dragon mated with Ramoth, Lessa's dragon. His policies revitalized the weyr and the Lord Holders, making them realize that Thread was indeed on its way and would arrive all too soon. Reference "Dragonflight" by Anne McCaffrey.
