Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Why was Maxine Nowicki out on bail?

Answer: stealing her boyfriend's car

Maxine and her slimy man Eddie Kuntz broke up and she stole his car, and some other personal items. He sent the cops after her, and she used Vinnie for bail money. Vinnie gave her FTA to Stephanie and it wasn't long before Ms. Plum was on another adventure.
2. Eddie Kuntz, Maxine's ex-boyfriend, offered Stephanie $1000 to recover love letters he'd written to Maxine.

Answer: True

The $1000 brought Stephanie around to the idea, after she'd first thought there was no way she'd attach herself unnecessarily to the greasy Eddie Kuntz. We are talking metaphorical grease, not the literal, physical version of greasy. Stephanie had to decipher several puzzles in her quest to locate both Maxine and the missing love letters.

The "love letters" turned out to be a smoke screen for what he really wanted from Maxine.
3. When Stephanie first saw Joe Morelli, she explained that it had been awhile since she had last been with him. How long had passed between Joe sightings?

Answer: 5 months

Book three ended in January, and book four began in July. Stephanie claimed she'd last seen Joe after they'd made out and he'd received a page. That had been February and it was now July. She said she hadn't seen or heard from him in five months. In that time, she'd put her Joe block back up to some degree.
4. In order to decipher Maxine's cryptic messages, Stephanie had to seek the help of others. Who was able to decrypt the first note?

Answer: Salvatore "Sally" Sweet

Sally Sweet was a rock n roll drag queen, recommended to Steph by one of her neighbors. Mrs. Kleinschmidt in apartment 315 tried to help, but had to call ahead to her nephew Salvatore. Salvatore, aka Sally Sweet, was a rockin' drag queen who shared a flat with a gay man.

The pair made an immediate impression on me as people I'd love to meet, at least Sally would be fun to know. I enjoyed reading on as Sally solved the puzzle and sent Stephanie to her next clue. It was under the dumpster at Cluck in a Bucket.
5. When Stephanie went to Atlantic City on the advice of Maxine's mom, who did NOT go with her?

Answer: Vinnie

The foursome headed to the Jersey home of gambling, looking for Maxine. Maxine had already threatened Stephanie, and her mom had caused both Stephanie and Lula's cars to explode! After they spent a considerable time looking, some time gambling, and not much had happened, there she was! She gave chase and escaped easily, leading the team to feel like they'd been set up. Lula and Stephanie decided to head back to Point Pleasant, where they felt she was really hiding out. But, before they could do so, someone firebombed Stephanie's apartment.
6. After Stephanie's apartment was set on fire, she went to live with Lula and Connie.

Answer: False

As far as I know, Lula and Connie do not live together. Stephanie did not live with either woman separately either, instead she chose the one person she felt it was okay to endanger- Joe Morelli. When her apartment went up in flames, she feared the worst for poor Rex. Thankfully, one of her neighbors had let herself into the flaming flat and saved the little hamster's life.

She and Rex couldn't live with any of Steph's closest pals or family, as they'd instantly become endangered. She couldn't stay with Ranger, as he lived in a cloud of mystery, with no one knowing his home's locale. So, she chose Joe, and he agreed, and the two embarked on a new sexual relationship as a bonus.
7. Who turned out to be Stephanie's crazy stalker?

Answer: Sugar

She was also being stalked a bit by Joyce Barnhardt, who could be called her only real enemy to this point. Joyce was the reason Stephanie's short marriage to attorney Dickie Orr had finally ended, but she wasn't a crazy stalker. She was working for Vinnie, also on the Maxine Nowicki case.

It was Sally Sweet's roommate, Sugar, who'd poured gasoline all inside her car and who had also sent a flaming cocktail into Steph's bedroom window. Sugar was a drag queen as well. Sugar, also known as Gregory Stern, had fallen into obsession with Sally. Sally, who was a drag queen but not a gay man, said Sugar thought that Stephanie had gotten in the way of Sally being attracted to him. Whatever the case was, I figured out the culprit was Sally early into that mystery.

After Sugar attacked Sally, he and Stephanie went to stay at her parents' house.
8. Was Stephanie forced to kill the stalker in order to save her own life?

Answer: No

She and Sally searched all of the places Sugar might be hanging out, but didn't find him until they reached a club called Ballroom. Ranger arrived shortly after she and Sally, and the three of them tried to find Sugar in the crowd. Instead of finding him, he found Steph alone in the ladies room.

He forced her outside with the plan to shoot her, but she escaped his bullets. When he'd spent them all, he pulled out a knife and chased her into a senior citizens' home. She was able to subdue with a knee to the groin and did not have to kill him.
9. The "funny money" maker and butcher turned out to be Leo Glick. He and his wife Betty had used intimidation and mutilation to try and find Maxine, who'd made off with their stash of fake twenty dollar bills. Who was Betty Glick related to in this twisted tale?

Answer: Eddie Kuntz

When Stephanie had believed herself to be out of leads to find Maxine, she finally finished sharing information with Joe. Then, it was her mom that urged her to rethink her leads. She did, and took Lula to investigate Leo and Betty Glick, Eddie's aunt and uncle. Stephanie entered Eddie's part of the house via an open window and then used a spare key to go into the Glick's half.

There she discovered the body of Nathan Russo. Nathan and Leo had been partnered in the counterfeit money scheme, and Leo had murdered Nathan to keep him quiet.

He planned to kill Stephanie as well, but Lula came to her rescue. Nathan had been the target of Joe's investigation, so he was able to solve his own case as well.
10. Stephanie took Maxine into custody at the end of the book.

Answer: True

Steph and Lula went after Maxine, after a hilariously tattooed Eddie Kuntz arrived naked on the scene of the Glick arrest. He informed the women of Maxine's plans and they headed for the airport. They discovered Maxine, Francine and Margie pulled over on the side of the road by Joyce. Joyce acted like a real jerk to both women, so Lula tasered her for at least the third time in this book. Stephanie uncuffed the other two women, even though she knew Joe wanted to question Francine, and drove Maxine to the police station.

Then she decided to spend the rest of the time at her parents' house, while she waited for her apartment to become available once more. The book ended with Joe allowing her to drive his Ducati, while he rode behind her.
