3. In Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book', which of the following is unquestionably a friend of Mowgli?

Answer: Bagheera

Bagheera, the black panther, is a friend and mentor to the man-cub Mowgli. Unknown to the other animals, he was actually born in human captivity. Toad loves to try the newest trendy craze. When caravan travel didn't turn out to be something he enjoyed, Toad decided to try motor cars. Oh, my! Toad is in trouble. He has had seven car accidents that put him into the hospital three times. Not only that, but he has spent a lot of money on fines. His friends are worried, and try to encourage him to end his reckless behavior. When that didn't work, they put him under house arrest. It doesn't work out well, however. With several hundred miles of Canadian wilderness and multiple geographic, animal and human obstacles against them, their chances are slim but their friendship finally sees them through. 7. Which one of her farm friends did Charlotte rescue from slaughter in E.B. White's 'Charlotte's Web' (1952)?

Answer: Wilbur

Charlotte is a spider who lives in Homer Zuckerman's barn. She makes friends with a pig named Wilbur, who had been separated from the other pigs because he is the runt of the litter. Lonely and with few friends, Wilbur meets Charlotte; when Wilbur finds out, however, that he is to be slaughtered soon, Charlotte helps him by weaving praises to Wilbur in her web. These messages in the webs make Wilbur famous and save his life. Charlotte, however, dies after laying her egg sac, leaving Wilbur with some new spider friends to keep him company.

8. What were the main animal friends of Christopher Robin in A. A. Milne's 'Winnie-the-Pooh' based on?

Answer: Stuffed animal toys owned by the author's son

Christopher Robin, the names given to the human protagonist of the 'Pooh' stories, were the first and middle name of the author's son. His animal friends were based on stuffed animals that Milne had bought for his son at Harrods in the 1920s. Five of the six toys survive to the present day - Winnie (although the toy was called Edward), Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger and Kanga. The sixth toy, Roo, was lost.

9. What is the name of the boy Lassie goes on a long journey to see in her debut 1940 novel, 'Lassie Come-Home', by Eric Knight?

Answer: Joe

'Lassie Come-Home' tells the story of Lassie, a border Collie, and her long, arduous journey to reunite with Joe Carraclough. The Carracloughs were forced to sell Lassie because they had fallen on hard times during the Depression. But the bond Lassie felt for Joe was too strong and she needed his companionship. This book was Lassie's debut novel although she had previously appeared in a similarly plotted short story in 'The Saturday Evening Post'.

Question by JoePetz
10. What kind of animal is Richard Parker, who accompanies Piscine Molitor Patel (known as Pi) on his sea voyage in Yann Martel's 'Life of Pi'?

Answer: Bengal tiger

The other animals were also on the lifeboat where Pi found himself after the ship on which his family was sailing to America sank. Although their relationship is not the kind of friendship one would usually expect, their mutual to-and-fro interaction is important in helping Pi survive the desperate voyage, and he is heartbroken when Richard Parker disappears into the jungle after they land in Mexico. Or at least, that's one version of the events.
