Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. With which of her husbands did Scarlett elope (well, almost eloped - it was very quiet)?

Answer: Frank Kennedy

Scarlett married Charles at Tara. She announced she was to marry Rhett, to the horror and dismay of the "Old Guard", though this wedding is never described; but when she married Frank she felt it better to keep things VERY quiet.
2. Where had Mammy been born and raised?

Answer: the Robillard great house

When we first meet Mammy at the beginning of the book we learn that she had been raised in the bedroom of Solange Robillard. Later when Scarlett wants her to work in the fields Mammy declared that she had been born in the Robillard great house. Field work was beneath her.
3. Which was Beatrice Tarleton's pride and joy?

Answer: Nellie, her red mare

It was common knowledge that Mrs. Tarleton held her horses, especially Nellie, in the utmost regard.
4. When Scarlett rushed home to Tara upon hearing the news of her father's death, what were the only items she packed?

Answer: night gown and tooth brush

"She had come so hurriedly that she had in her small carpetbag only a nightgown and a tooth brush, not even a change of underwear. She was uncomfortable in the tight black dress she had borrowed from Mrs. Meade, for she had no time to get mourning clothes for herself."
5. To whom did Scarlett give her father's watch after his funeral?

Answer: Pork

Pork thought the watch belonged by rights to Wade Hampton but Scarlett said that Wade had never done anything for Gerald. "Don't be a fool, Pork. If ever anyone deserved a watch, you do, and I know Pa would approve".
6. At Scarlett's request, what did Pork dig up from under the arbor?

Answer: corn whiskey

The Robillard silver went down the well, the sweet potatoes, or yams, had stayed in their hills as the Yankees didn't know they were edible and Mammy had buried the apples under the house. Scarlett had wanted wine but the Yankees had cleaned out the wine cellar and then she remembered that Gerald had buried a barrel of corn whiskey under the arbor.
7. While at Aunt Pitty's, why did Scarlett begin nursing wounded soldiers at the hospital?

Answer: she saw no way of getting out of it

"... and nursing was something she did simply because she didn't know how to get out of it." She might have endured the hospital if she had been "permitted to use her charms on the convalescent men, for many were attractive and well born..." But as Scarlett was a widow such flirtations were strictly not allowed.
8. Upon her death bed, what promise did Melanie NOT extract from Scarlett?

Answer: to forgive India

Melanie never gave a thought towards India after she had "lied" about Scarlett and Ashley.
9. When was the first time that Scarlett thought, then dismissed the idea, that she was in love with Rhett?

Answer: when he began calling on her after the bazaar

"During the months that followed the bazaar, Rhett called whenever he was in town..." "For all his exasperating qualities, she grew to look forward to his calls..." "It's almost like I was in love with him!" she thought, bewildered. "But I'm not and I just can't understand it."
10. Who did Scarlett call for when she was ill after her tumble down the stairs?

Answer: Melanie

She really wanted Rhett but true to her stubborn self would not call for him for fear he did not want her.
