Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Scarlett is getting ready for the barbecue at the Wilkes' plantation, she tries on many dresses, but ends up choosing the green sprigged afternoon dress. Why does she reject the black bombazine dress?

Answer: she thinks it makes her look old

Scarlett rejects the black bombazine because she thinks it makes her look "a trifle elderly". The plaid tafetta dress has a grease spot on the basque, and she is afraid that even if she pins her brooch over it, Melanie might have "sharp eyes" and "be catty enough to mention it".

The various cotton dresses she owns are not "festive enough for the occasion". Her lavender dress with its "wide insets of lace" is beautiful, but she thinks it is "too wishy-washy", and it would be better for her sister Careen. So, of course she must wear the green sprigged muslin!
2. When Scarlett is in Atlanta living with Melanie and Aunt Pittypat, she has a crying fit one day because she is depressed and unhappy that everyone in town but her seems to be going to a picnic. Aunt Pittypat scolds Scarlett because she catches her doing what?

Answer: waving to people from her bedroom window

Aunt Pitty solds Scarlett for waving to the picnickers from her bedroom window. Scarlett says that they don't know it's her bedroom window, and she throws herself on the bed and has a crying fit. Melanie tries to console her, but Scarlett yells at her for stroking her hair and the two timid women leave the room.
3. Scarlett has a guilty secret. When Melanie and Aunt Pitty aren't home, what does Scarlett sneak into Melanie's room to do?

Answer: read Ashley's letters to Melanie

Scarlett sneaks into Melanie's room to read Ashley's letters to see if Ashley has fallen in love with his wife; however, she is irritated and confused by Ashley's thoughts, and feels that if he was her husband and wrote such letters to her, she would be furious.
4. Uncle Henry Hamilton is a member of the Old Guard and he ends up defending Atlanta from Sherman. When he gets leave one day, he shows up at the house on Peachtree Street for a little rest. Melanie grabs his arm while he is talking to her and Scarlett, and he crankily tells her not to. Why?

Answer: he has lice

Uncle Henry Hamilton tells Melanie, "Don't touch me, I'm crawling with lice!" Even though the old man complains a lot, he feels proud and rather adventurous.
5. Uncle Henry didn't just come to the house to relax, but to give Melanie the sad news that her father-in-law has been killed. What does he bring to Melanie that he removed from John Wilkes's lifeless body?

Answer: his watch

Uncle Henry is unable to tell Melanie her father-in law died, so he leaves the unpleasant job to Scarlett and gives her the watch to give to Melanie. Scarlett is very sad that John Wilkes is dead, because she dreamed that one day he would be her faher-in-law.

She also doesn't relish having to break the news to Melanie, but as so often happens in the book, Scarlett has to do things that other people are unwilling or unable to do for themselves.
6. Coffee is a luxury during the dark days before Atlanta falls. What does Scarlett have to drink for breakfast instead of drinking coffee?

Answer: corn and yams, ground up

"The heavy hominy stuck in her throat like glue, and never before had the mixture of parched corn and ground-up yams that passed for coffee been so repulsive." This is in the first paragraph of chapter XXI.
7. When Scarlett and Melanie return to Tara after the fall of Atlanta, they find the plantation in a sad state. They are in constant danger of Yankees showing up, and one night they do. They hide the silver in the well, and drive the pigs into the swamp. Where does Scarlett hide the wallet?

Answer: in baby Beau's diaper

The wallet is hidden in the baby's diaper, because Scarlett knew the first place the Yankees's would look would be down her dress. She is disgusted when they do, but she feels triumphant they they don't discover her real hiding place.
8. Wade is terrified of the Yankee soldiers, but he protests when they try to take something that belongs to him. He holds out his hand and cries "Mine!". What is it?

Answer: his father's sword

Scarlett is furious when the Yankees try to take her little boy's sword. When she pleads with the commanding officer, he examines the sword and sees it is not a Rebel sword but an heirloom from the Mexican War. He relents and returns the sword to Wade.
9. When Scarlett is still in Atlanta, one day she tries out a new coiffure. What is it called?

Answer: cats, rats, and mice

Scarlett is frustrated, because she can do the cats and rats, but the pins keep slipping from her hair when she attempts the mice. Another reference to Scarlett's hair is when she buys some false curls and Rhett burns them.
10. When Scarlett is married to Frank Kennedy, he is sorely disillusioned. He can't bear to admit even to himself that she married him just for the money to pay taxes on Tara, and he tries to convince himself that she truly cares for him. He thinks of Scarlett as an exotic bird, when a much plainer bird may have suited him just as well, "In fact, much better". What other bird is Frank thinking of?

Answer: a wren

I hope no-one chose tufted titmouse! Scarlett is truly grateful to Frank, but she makes him pretty miserable.
11. When Scarlett is driving to and from the mill every day, Melanie becomes worried about her safety and hires Archie to chauffer Scarlett. She discovers that he is an ex-con. What did Archie do?

Answer: kill his wife

Archie killed his wife for committing adultery. Scarlett is furious that Melanie hired him, and even more upset that Melanie knew of his past and didn't inform her. Archie thinks the world of "Miz Wilkes", but he doesn't think too much of Scarlett.
12. Archie quits working for Scarlett because she offends him. What does she do?

Answer: leases convicts

Because Archie was a convict, he knows what poor conditions leased convicts live in. Scarlett is actually relieved when Archie quits, because she detests him.
13. When Ashley and Melanie move to Atlanta after the war, a relative comes to live with them. Who is it?

Answer: India Wilkes

India Wilkes despises Scarlett, and the feeling is mutual. There is a great deal of animosity between them because India feels that Scarlett stole Stuart Tarleton's affections from her long ago. Stuart began courting India after Scarlett married Charles Hamilton, but he was killed in the war, leaving India to mourn him like a widow, but without the status and respect accorded to widows.

She took her revenge on Scarlett when she sees Scarlett in Ashley's arms one day; ironically, it was innocent, but it doesn't stop her from telling everyone.

This destroys her relationship with Melanie, and she has to move out.
14. Honey Wilkes ends up marrying a man whom her sister India considers to be beneath her. Why doesn't India like him?

Answer: he is a coarse Westerner

Honey marries a "coarse Westerner", and India cannot bring herself to live with them, because she feels her sister married beneath herself. Other family members privately think Honey did very well, considering the shortage of men to choose from combined with her silly personality. (They also think that Honey and her husband are thrilled that India doesn't want to live with them!)
15. When the lone Yankee soldier shows up at Tara and Scarlett is forced to shoot him, how does she feel afterwards?

Answer: she feels thrilled and triumphant

Scarlett is surprised to feel alive with a "tiggerish joy" and actually thinks that she could grind her bare heel into the gaping wound and enjoy the feel of the dead Yankee's blood. UGH! That is something that is definitely not conveyed to the audience in the movie!
16. When Melanie appears at the top of the stairs with Charles' sword after she hears Scarlett shoot the Yankee, what does Scarlett think of her?

Answer: she feels respect for her

Scarlett is overwhelmed with a deep admiration and kinship with Melanie, and she thinks to herself, "She's like me!" She is amazed at Melanie's courage, and even more impressed when Melanie says about taking the body to bury it, "We'll each take a leg and drag it." We the reader see in this example, and many others, how so often Melanie's quiet strength supports Scarlett.
17. Who commiserates with Scarlett about how difficult it is when you know you've seen the worst life has to give you?

Answer: Grandma Fontaine

Grandma Fontaine surprises Scarlett by expressing these thoughts; but when she goes on to describe her family's slaughter at the hands of Indians, Scarlett misses the point entirely, becomes bored, and thinks that Grandma Fontaine doesn't really understand her at all.
18. After Scarlett and Rhett are married, Rhett sees Wade moping around the house one day and he asks the boy why he doesn't go play with his friends. What answer does Wade give him?

Answer: everyone else is at a birthday party

Wade is feeling blue because he wasn't invited to the Picard birthday party. Rhett is very sensitive to his feelings, and gives him some money to go buy some candy. Rhett realizes that he and Scarlett had better mend fences with the "Old Guard" if they want Bonnie to be received when she grows up.
19. Name the Atlanta dowager who plagues Scarlett for years.

Answer: All of these

These three women, along with Mrs. Whiting, gossip about Scarlett for years, and she comes to despise all of them.
20. What are the last four words of the book?

Answer: Tomorrow is another day

After all, "tomorrow is another day" is Scarlett's mantra from the middle of the book on, and the movie ends with the same words.
