Scarlett O'Hara, Belle of the Ball Quiz

Throughout the novel, as well as the movie, we see that Scarlett is indeed beautiful, though perhaps not classically so. I have always found it somewhat ironic that Margaret Mitchell began the novel this way.

Gerald O'Hara left Ireland after killing a man. Ellen Robillard had an aristocratic French background and was reared in Savannah.

Ellen Robillard was fifteen years old when her cousin Phillipe, whom she was madly in love with , was killed in a barroom brawl. After that, she married Gerald O'Hara because he was a kind man, he could take her away from Savannah forever, and it would horrify her family, whom she blamed for driving Phillipe away.

Answer: Only two men could sit beside her at a table

In the movie, Scarlett says plainly to her bevvy of suitors " A girl only has two sides at a table" She isn't quite that open about it in the book, but she thinks it even if she doesn't say it.

Answer: Cathleen Calvert

Cathleen is the only girl Scarlett thinks of favorably- interesting, because she was the only girl who was close to being as popular as Scarlett. Later in the novel, Scarlett is truly sorry for Cathleen when her family falls on hard times and Cathleen has to marry her family's Yankee overseer.( Not sorry enough to help her out, though.)

In the book as well as the movie, Cathleen Calvert is the person who tells Scarlett about Rhett's terrible reputation. In the movie, we see Scarlett whisper something in Cathleen's ear, and Cathleen replies,"No, but she was ruined just the same." From the book, we know the question Scarlett asked Cathleen was "Did she have a baby?" Oh, what cats!

Answer: a gigged frog

Scarlett doesn't see the sincerity and love in Charles's "shy brown eyes"....she only thinks cooly to herself that he resembles a "gigged frog"...poor Charles, thank goodness that he never realizes how little his wife thinks of him.

Answer: She tells him she'll scream if he comes near her

Charles Hamilton spends his wedding night in a chair after his wife threatens to scream the house down if he comes near her. A few nights later Scarlett breaks down and cries because of the mess she has made of her life, and Charles climbs in bed and tries to comfort her. We can only assume this is when Wade Hampton was conceived.

Pittypat Hamilton,christened Sarah Jane Hamilton, received her nickname because she crammed her feet into too-small slippers and pitter pattered around the house.

Uncle Peter is a loyal and faithful servant, and he watches over Miss Pittypat with great care. In later years, he drives Scarlett to and from work, but he becomes angry at her for allowing some Yankee women to slight him, and he refuses to drive her anymore.

Scarlett is shocked and mortified when she realizes she doesn't care about the Cause, and she is determined to hide it from everyone- but Rhett Butler sees through her facade.

Answer: he heard her tell Ashley she was in love with him

Rhett was present in the library when Scarlett confessed her love to Ashley, and she fears he will expose her. He assures her he won't expose her, and they become 'friends'.

Answer: He gets drunk and loses all his money in a poker game

Gerald loses the money he came to Atlanta to buy supplies with to Rhett in a poker game, and Rhett walks him home to Aunt Pitty's house drunk in the middle of the night singing at the top of his lungs. Scarlett suspects that Rhett got her father drunk and won his money to give her some leverage in her fight to stay in Atlanta.

Aunt Pittypat believes in the tried and true method of feeling faint on a regular basis to prove her gentility. Scarlett and Melanie suspect she does this for attention, but I think maybe the old girl just needs a drink now and then.

Scarlett also says "Mother of God" and " Great balls of fire". These may seem fairly tame to us, but it was definitely considered swearing in her time.(Later in the book Melanie exclaims "Stars!" and Scarlett is shocked- this is harsh language for Melanie.)

Scarlett is shocked by Frank's quick thinking and cool head in the face of potential danger when he risks their safety by helping Tony leave town- this gives us a look at another side of the timid Frank.

Answer: India Wilkes & Carreen O'Hara

Scarlett is amazed that Stuart could go from her to India Wilkes, and she fells that Carreen is too young to have a beau. Sadly, both of the boys die in the war. India acts like she has been widowed, and Careen joins a convent.

Scarlett has been drinking the morning of Frank's funeral, and Rhett smells it on her breath despite the fact that she gargles cologne to cover it up. When she tearfully confesses Frank's death is her fault, he gets her riled up and fighting mad to snap her out of her depression.

Answer: Running lost through the mist

Scarlett dreams that she is lost in the mist and she is looking for something, but she doesn't know what it is. At the end of the novel, she realizes she is looking for Rhett.

Answer: Lorena

Rhett loves children, and when Ella is born, he stops by to see Scarlett and hold the baby. Wade, Scarlett's son with Charles, calls Rhett Uncle Rhett- this sits sorely with Frank, but he is too timid to object.

Answer: from the rooster's tail

When Scarlett is getting ready for her trip to Atlanta, all of the women in the house get in the spirit of things and enjoy themselves for the first time in months while they cut and sew. But Ashley is disturbed, because he suspects what Scarlett is willing to do to get the tax money, and he thinks to himself that he has never seen anyone as brave as Scarlett going forth to " conquer the world in her mother's curtains and a rooster's tail".

Answer: " Who baptized your other brats after you killed my mother?"

Scarlett is furious when Emmie and Jonas show up at Tara. In the movie, their arrival brings about Gerald's death, but in the book, Gerald has a fight with Suellen, Scarlett's sister, and that is what causes him to ride off on his horse and end up breaking his neck.

Answer: To make everyone envious and sorry for being mean to her

Scarlett is determined to make everyone sorry for being so mean to her, and she invites all of the "old guard" to her home for a party. She is bitterly disappointed when no-one shows up, but Rhett just laughs, and Melanie consoles her.

Answer: complications from a miscarriage

Melanie desperately wants another child, though Dr. Meade warns her this would be disastrous. But after Beau is born, she throws caution to the wind and becomes pregnant with the baby that will ultimately end her life.

Answer: that Melanie was her one true friend

Scarlett finally realizes how genuinely and truly Melanie loves her like no-one else. To me, this is the saddest part of the novel and the movie, because of course Scarlett can manage to get Rhett back, but she will have no chance to become a real friend to Melanie.

But Scarlett finds comfort in one thing, which should comfort the reader too - Melanie never knew that Scarlett loved Ashley, and her heart was so pure, she never knew how Scarlett had despised her for so many years.
