Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Mountain Legal Aid Clinic is the name of the firm Samantha interned at. What was the name of the firm she was furloughed from?

Answer: Scully & Pershing

Scully & Pershing is the largest law firm in the world, or at least John Grisham's world. They employ 2,000 lawyers in twenty countries, half in New York City alone. They occupy floors 30 to 65 in the New York building in which they work.
2. What was Samantha's salary when she was furloughed from her previous firm?

Answer: $180,000

As a third-year associate at Scully & Pershing she was earning $180,000 annually in base salary alone. She also received bonuses and benefits. Her new position as an intern at the legal aid clinic paid her nothing and had no benefit package.
3. Which character was Samantha's roommate in New York?

Answer: Blythe

Her name was Blythe and they were friends and former classmates at Columbia. She worked at a rival megafirm. They shared a chic SoHo loft together but not much of their lives because they were too busy working.
4. Who was Samantha's ex-boyfriend?

Answer: Henry

Henry was an aspiring actor. They dated for about a year until the strain of her work schedule and his unemployment grew to be too much and they broke up. He moved to Los Angeles and became a limousine driver while doing non-speaking roles in commercials.
5. Who were Samantha's parents?

Answer: Marshall and Karen

Marshall is an ex-lawyer who used to sue airlines. He spent three years in prison for corruption. Karen was a senior attorney for the Department of Justice.
6. What was the name of the phony police officer who pulled Samantha over in Dunne Spring?

Answer: Romey

Romey always wanted to be the sheriff and felt the need to patrol around Dunne Spring occasionally. He had a few screws loose and does not like people from out of state, especially New York and Vermont.
7. On which day do the ladies at the legal aid clinic have their weekly brown bag lunch?

Answer: Monday

Samantha, Mattie, Annette, and Claudelle would gather in the main conference room every Monday. They would eat quickly while discussing clients, cases, or any other firm-related business. If one of the ladies missed the lunch, they could bank on being discussed at length by the other three.
8. Lisa Tate's two boys were crushed by a giant boulder while they slept and were killed instantly. What were the names of her sons?

Answer: Eddie and Brandon

Eddie was 11 and his younger brother was Brandon, who was eight and was born two months premature. They were sound asleep while Strayhorn Coal was strip-mining Enid Mountain. A bulldozer dislodged a large boulder and it rolled roughly one mile before it crashed into the Tates' mobile home. Both Tate boys were crushed as was Brandon's computer, which was under their bed.
9. How much did Donovan settle the Tate case for?

Answer: $1.7 million

Before the trial began Donovan swore he would not settle, even though everyone told him he should so that at least Lisa would have something to show for the loss of her boys. He won the case and was awarded $3 million, the amount he asked for. After the judgment Strayhorn offered a settlement of $1.7 million to avoid an appeal and at Lisa's urging he agreed.

However Donovan died in a plane crash shortly afterward and Strayhorn rescinded their settlement offer.
10. Annette had two children, a boy and a girl. What were their names?

Answer: Kim and Adam

Kim was thirteen and Adam was ten. They took an instant liking to Samantha and quickly considered her to be a big sister. They wanted her to have dinner with them every night, but she preferred to eat alone.
11. What was the make and model of the plane Donovan owned?

Answer: Cessna 172 Skyhawk

It was only referred to by its proper name, the Cessna 172, once. Every time after that Grisham called it by its nickname of Skyhawk. The other three airplanes I listed are real and still in production as of March 2015.
12. What was the name of Donovan and Jeff's mother?

Answer: Rose

Rose committed suicide when Donovan was sixteen and Jeff was nine. She was distraught after a flood destroyed their family home. Donovan found her. He and Jeff built a cross to mark the spot where she died out of old timbers from the house.
13. Where did Buddy Ryzer work?

Answer: Lonerock Coal

In the book Lonerock Coal was the third-largest producer of coal in the United States. Buddy earned $22 per hour operating a track shovel at the Murray Gap Mine in West Virginia until he could not physically work anymore and was fired. He was a surface miner, not a strip miner.
14. Did Samantha ever have sex with Donovan?

Answer: No

Donovan was a womanizer and had an affair with Annette, but Samantha never slept with him. It was Jeff, Donovan's younger brother, that she was intimate with.
15. At the end of the book Samantha moved back to New York.

Answer: False

She decided to stay in Brady to wrap up the cases she had left. She became an official paid attorney with the legal aid clinic. The salary she negotiated was $39,000. She didn't want $40,000 like Mattie and Annette because she felt Annette would resent that.
